Winter is usually a happy time of year, but fans of The Christmas Chronicles might be let down this year. Kurt Russell, who stars in the series, has shared that there aren’t currently any plans to make a third movie.
The actor plays Santa Claus in the Christmas movies available on Netflix. The first movie came out in 2018, and a second one, directed and co-written by Chris Columbus, was released two years after that.
Although both movies were generally well-received by both critics and audiences, Netflix hasn’t officially approved a third film. Russell’s comments suggest that a sequel isn’t planned for the near future.

The actor explained in an interview with MovieWeb that their use of algorithms helped them quickly grow their audience with both their first and second projects.
After releasing a couple of installments, creators often wonder if making a third will significantly attract more viewers. That’s the challenge with shows on most streaming platforms, and it’s unclear if this particular show will get another season.

Even though he doesn’t know what’s next for the movies, Russell said he thoroughly enjoyed playing Santa Claus. He explained that his performance is a genuine reflection of how he envisioned the character, and he especially appreciated working with director Chris Columbus.
I absolutely loved being a part of those movies! Both of them were fantastic, and I really connected with the character I played. Honestly, getting to play Santa Claus was especially meaningful to me because it brings back so many wonderful family memories.

Fans will likely be disappointed to hear this news, as both movies have consistently been popular on Netflix, often appearing in the trending charts during December. Critics may also be unhappy, given the films’ fairly positive scores on Rotten Tomatoes – 67% and 66% respectively.
I checked out The Christmas Chronicles 2, and Digital Spy gave it three stars. Basically, it’s a really fun, easy-watch Christmas movie, and Kurt Russell is still fantastic as Santa. It just leaves you feeling good, you know? A nice, warm feeling.
The Christmas Chronicles and The Christmas Chronicles 2 are streaming on Netflix.
