BioShock 4 Gets Official Update (& It’s Bad News for Fans)

Take-Two Interactive’s CEO recently discussed the company’s current situation, and the news isn’t as bad as fans might have feared.

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, addressed the long wait – now seven years – for BioShock 4, which was first announced as being in development in 2019. He explained that while he wasn’t surprised by the delay – as that would imply an unexpected and sudden change – he is “deeply disappointed” with how long it’s taking.

Zelnick said he’s much more confident about the project now that Rod Fergusson, a well-known designer and producer, is leading it. He admitted it was difficult to find the right person to take creative charge.

Looking back, we spent too much time and money exploring ideas that didn’t work out. However, we already have a solid game, and we’re dedicated to making it truly exceptional. We’re collaborating with the studio’s leaders to figure out how to achieve that.

BioShock 4 Has Been in Development for Years

Released in 2007, the game introduced players to Rapture, a stunning underwater city built in the Art Deco style. Created by the wealthy industrialist Andrew Ryan, Rapture was designed as a self-sufficient world, isolated from the surface. Unfortunately, this isolation led to dangerous new technologies, deep social inequalities, and a frightening, violent society.

When it was first released, BioShock quickly became a huge success. Within a year, over 2.2 million copies were sold, and the game received numerous awards and nominations from leading gaming publications like X-Play and IGN, even winning multiple Game of the Year titles.

Since the original game, several sequels and expansions have come out, like BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite, all of which were well-received and showed the series remained popular. However, fans haven’t seen a completely new main installment since then, except for the Burial at Sea story released in two parts for BioShock Infinite.

It’s understandable that fans are still waiting for BioShock 4, especially since Take-Two Interactive has been heavily focused on Grand Theft Auto VI. However, that doesn’t mean the BioShock series is over. The next installment is expected to be a more focused, character-driven story, rather than the large-scale game some fans might anticipate.
