This series remains a hugely important piece of art and has had a lasting impact on popular culture, becoming more than just a robot anime – it’s become an icon. Now, a new event celebrating its visual style is coming soon, and we’ve just gotten a first look at what to expect.
The official exhibit for “Lines of Evangelion” recently shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing the main characters with updated designs. These new looks give the characters a more contemporary feel and highlight the key idea behind the exhibit.
The unveiling of the new exhibit’s artwork comes after the announcement that the project was officially confirmed to be in development on February 23, 2026.
First ‘Lines of Evangelion’ Art Reveals Modern Urban Redesigns for the EVA Pilots
The “Lines of Evangelion” exhibit, held at the Incubase Arena in Hong Kong, is a special event dedicated to the world of Neon Genesis Evangelion. According to organizers, the exhibit showcases artistic takes on iconic character outlines, the detailed designs of the mechs, and the unique typography—including the distinctive Mincho font—used by creator Hideaki Anno. It’s designed to encourage visitors to look closely at the details that make up the show’s expansive universe.
This means the characters and ideas will be reimagined with a fresh perspective, including new versions of their familiar appearances. For example, a recent image posted on the official Evangelion X account shows the characters wearing everyday clothes instead of their usual plugsuits.
This collection features Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Mari, and Kaworu from the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, dressed in relaxed, modern outfits. Their clothing subtly incorporates the colors of their pilot suits or the Evangelions they pilot—Asuka, for instance, wears a reddish-orange and yellow dress with red leggings. The characters are pictured on a Hong Kong street, adding a vibrant cultural backdrop and building excitement for an upcoming event.
In addition to this featured artwork, the exhibit will showcase 500 important animation frames, plus concept art and original illustrations created just for the show. Visitors will also find exclusive merchandise, including free Evangelion Character Student Cards with each ticket. “Lines of Evangelion” opens on May 23rd and runs through July 12th. This is the second time this celebration of the mecha anime has been held, following a successful event in South Korea in 2005.
