PBS’s 2-Season Fantasy Classic Is Officially Getting Rebooted Next Year

There’s exciting news for young viewers! A new animated series based on the beloved classic, Clifford the Big Red Dog, is officially in the works.

It was announced that Clifford the Big Red Dog will be back on PBS Kids in 2027! The new show will be produced by 9 Story Media Group, the team behind Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, with animation by Brown Bag Films. Based on Norman Bridwell’s popular book series, the new Clifford will, like the original series from the early 2000s, focus on teaching children important life skills such as problem-solving, making friends, teamwork, and contributing to their communities.

New Clifford Reboot Gets Season Order, 2027 Release Date

The reboot will have a first season of 26 episodes, each about 11 minutes long. This is similar to the original series, which aired on PBS Kids in 30-minute blocks, with each episode split into two 11-minute stories.

Though it will build on what came before, the new series is aiming to be unique. According to Vince Commisso, CEO of 9 Story Media Group, the show will be funnier and more playful than previous versions, while still maintaining the heartwarming and emotional connection that fans appreciate.

PBS Kids is excited to bring back Clifford the Big Red Dog, a beloved character for generations, to audiences nationwide. According to Sara DeWitt, a PBS Kids executive, helping children develop strong social skills and build lasting relationships is incredibly important for their success both in school and in life.

From the moment Clifford the Big Red Dog first appeared in print, he became a beloved character at Scholastic and resonated with readers around the world, building a truly recognizable brand. According to Iole Lucchese, a leader at Scholastic and executive producer of the Clifford series, this new show expands on what makes Clifford so charming with updated stories, opening doors for new fans and continuing the franchise’s success.

A New ‘Interactive’ Clifford Game is Also On the Way

Along with the news about the Clifford reboot, it was announced that a new, interactive Clifford game will be released alongside the show. We don’t yet know specific details about the game or who will be voicing the characters.

In the 2000 TV series, Grey DeLisle (known for Invincible) played Emily Elizabeth, the 8-year-old girl who adopted Clifford as a puppy and saw him grow into a huge dog. The beloved actor John Ritter provided the voice for Clifford, the large red Labrador-Vizsla mix, throughout all episodes of the show’s two seasons.

This popular series includes more than 90 books and has sold over 135 million copies around the world. A movie based on the series came out in 2021, but it received a mixed reaction from critics.

The Clifford the Big Red Dog reboot arrives on PBS Kids in 2027.
