Steam is the clear leader in PC gaming. As the dominant platform for buying and downloading PC games – capturing over 75% of the market – it generates billions of dollars in revenue annually. While Valve has recently started making gaming hardware, like the successful Steam Deck, their plans for expanding into hardware may face challenges after 2026.
Valve’s Steam Machine is expected later this year, but increasing costs for computer parts are preventing them from announcing a price or firm release date. They’ve recently launched a new Steam Controller, however, problems with RAM availability are delaying future products and could potentially impact the future of Steam.
The Steam Machine’s Price Could Be Sky High Due to RAM Shortages
In November 2025, Valve revealed the Steam Machine, a new computer designed to be both portable and powerful enough to run today’s games. Gamers were initially enthusiastic, but quickly wanted to know how much it would cost – a question that remains unanswered.
Companies like Sony and Nintendo have lowered the price of their gaming consoles to make them more accessible. Valve, however, plans to make a profit on the Steam Machine, potentially making it quite expensive for many gamers.
Video game prices have gone up a lot recently, with companies like Nintendo and Sony raising their prices. A worldwide shortage of RAM, driven by investments in artificial intelligence, is a big part of the problem, and other important computer parts are also becoming more expensive.
Valve has acknowledged that recent RAM shortages affected their plans for new hardware. Steve Cardinali, a Valve hardware engineer, explained that they decided to launch the Steam Controller before the Steam Machine because the Controller doesn’t require RAM. This allowed them to release the Controller as a more affordable product.
The Steam Controller has been very popular, selling out quickly after release. However, while many loyal Valve fans are eager to buy Steam products, the Steam Machine might be too expensive for most customers.
A lot of gamers have said they won’t purchase the device if it’s too expensive, and that’s understandable. However, everything currently points to a price similar to other gaming PCs. Experts believe it will likely cost over $1,000, which would be a tough sell for those who already own a computer.
The Steam Deck Is Officially Leaving Production in 2026
The Steam Deck is facing similar issues to the Steam Machine, with new units becoming very hard to find. Production has been slowed down by a lack of necessary computer memory, so those wanting one may need to look for used devices.
If things were different, the Steam Deck’s eventual replacement might seem obvious now. But because the Steam Deck and the earlier Steam Machines share similar technical challenges, it’s unlikely Valve will announce a new handheld gaming device in the near future.
The Steam Deck proved surprisingly popular for Valve, and those who missed out can still find one used. However, its success doesn’t solve a larger issue for the company – it seems Valve is trying to innovate in a particularly unstable market. This could be a significant setback for Valve’s move into hardware, and might signal the end of their experimentation with new technology ventures, as the risks are simply too high right now.
If current trends continue, Valve’s Gabe Newell might find his luxury spending impacted. While Valve tries to ease the cost of new hardware, rapidly increasing prices could lead many gamers to simply keep their existing equipment.
