A new trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has dropped and is dividing fans.
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie is based on Homer’s classic story, The Odyssey. Matt Damon will play Odysseus, the king trying to return home after the Trojan War, in a journey that lasts ten years. The film also features a star-studded cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron. Nolan recently shared a new trailer for the movie during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
The new trailer for The Odyssey quickly sparked a lot of conversation online. While reactions were mixed, many fans are excited about the film’s grand scope, stunning visuals, and the music by Ludwig Göransson. Matt Damon’s performance as Odysseus is also getting positive attention, and overall, there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the movie.
However, some viewers haven’t been impressed. They’ve described the visuals as surprisingly bland and similar to Marvel movies, and criticized the dialogue as awkward or hard to follow. A small number were strongly disappointed, calling it terrible, while others felt the story’s overall structure and speed didn’t do justice to its grand scope. Here are a few examples of what people are saying:
Cade Onder shared their enthusiastic reaction to the movie, saying it was incredible. They were particularly impressed by the movie’s grand scope and Damon’s performance as a determined hero longing to return to his family. Cade even predicted an over-the-top reaction to a specific scene where the hero shoots an arrow through axes.
Reelandroll shared their thoughts on the show, saying the scenes set during Odysseus’s journey seem promising, but the parts filmed in Ithaca aren’t as strong. They were very impressed with the casting of John Leguizamo as the character Eumaeus, calling it a great choice.
Niall points out a similar reaction happened with the film One Battle After Another. After the trailer for The Odyssey was released, some people commented that it looked like an HBO television episode – he’s not sure what that means, but suggests we might just need to wait and see how the film turns out.
Gene Park playfully tweeted that he couldn’t believe Christopher Nolan had cast actual Laestrygonians in his film, predicting it would be amazing. Laestrygonians are figures from Greek mythology known as a tribe of giant cannibals.
Danimalish believes the latest trailer for The Odyssey is the best one so far, calling it a potentially massive and epic adventure. He particularly praises Ludwig’s musical score and the film’s visuals, suggesting it could be the best film of the year.
Femboxd points out the visuals are very similar to those found in Marvel movies, saying it wouldn’t be surprising if someone mistook it for one.
MaxFromQuebec wasn’t impressed with the trailer, commenting that while they generally like Christopher Nolan, the dialogue felt weak. They jokingly pointed out that Nolan also wrote the notoriously complex film Tenet.
PalmyrPar expressed extreme disappointment, stating the work is “shockingly bad” and will likely be worse than any film Christopher Nolan has directed. They didn’t provide any further details about why they feel this way.
Safoestrela feels the trailer doesn’t effectively convey the themes or story of The Odyssey. They find the structure and pacing confusing, and the supposedly epic shots don’t add anything meaningful.
Blake thinks the new trailer for the movie Odyssey is surprisingly bad, even though he generally doesn’t enjoy films by director Christopher Nolan. He didn’t share any further details about why he feels this way.
Christopher Nolan’s latest film, The Odyssey, marks his thirteenth writing and directing project. It stars Matt Damon – who previously worked with Nolan on Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023) – as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca. The movie tells the story of Odysseus’s long and challenging journey home after the Trojan War, where he faces legendary creatures like the Cyclops Polyphemus, the alluring sirens, and the nymph Calypso, all while trying to return to his wife, Penelope.
The film adaptation of The Odyssey boasts a star-studded cast, including Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, and Zendaya as Athena. Other notable actors joining the production are Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Lupita Nyong’o, Will Yun Lee, Elliot Page, Samantha Morton, and Corey Hawkins.
As a huge Nolan fan, I’m absolutely floored by the scale of The Odyssey. Apparently, it cost around $250 million to make – making it his most ambitious project to date! What’s really impressive is that it’s the first film ever shot completely using IMAX 70mm cameras. I’ve also been seeing a lot of discussion online about the costumes, and whether they’re completely true to the historical period. It’s definitely got people talking!
People have had very different reactions to the trailer for The Odyssey. Some are really excited, while others are cautiously optimistic or concerned. A few simply dislike it without offering much explanation. It’s not surprising, though – every great journey starts with a bit of both excitement and uncertainty.
