A new dramedy featuring Bella Ramsey (from The Last of Us) and James Norton has announced its UK release date and shared a first trailer. The film follows Ivy, a teenager who, after recovering from cancer, attends a summer camp for young people with similar experiences – a place she jokingly refers to as “chemo camp.”
George Jacques wrote and directed Sunny Dancer, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. It will be released in cinemas on August 14th.
Ramsey plays the role of Ivy, a young camper whose parents, Karen (played by Jessica Gunn from Baby Reindeer) and Bob Norton, encourage her to attend a summer camp.

The project is led by Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris), a camp leader trying to connect with the guarded Ivy. As she slowly gets to know her fellow campers, including the hopeful Ella (Ruby Stokes) who plans to lose her virginity at camp, bonds begin to form.
“You’re just not my type,” Ella confessed to Ivy one evening. She’s really into Tristan, the attractive counsellor (played by Louis Gaunt), and doesn’t see a romantic connection with Ivy.

“What a shame,” an eye-rolling Ivy hits back.
As the main character spends more time with another camper, Jake (Daniel Quinn-Toye), she begins to fall for him, forming a sweet and gentle bond.
Earl Cave plays Ralph, Conrad Khan plays Archie, and Shalom Brune-Franklin plays Lucy – they’re all new friends of Ivy’s in the show.

The film was well-received at the Berlinale film festival. The Upcoming praised it as a “must-watch” and “an absolute gem.” RadioTimes highlighted its “sharply funny” and realistic portrayal of teenage life, noting the director’s skillful approach. IndieWire commented that the writer-director Jacques has brought a bit of optimism to a typically dark genre.
The filmmaker explained that they want the movie to be both hilarious and deeply moving, making audiences laugh hysterically before bringing them to tears. Ultimately, they hope viewers will leave with a new understanding of young people facing hardship, seeing them not as helpless victims, but as resilient, multifaceted individuals full of life.
Sunny Dancer will be released in cinemas on 14 August.
