A really satisfying part of watching anime is seeing characters get stronger as the story goes on. Some characters are already powerful at the beginning and just keep improving, while others start out weak and gradually learn new skills or techniques that make them much more capable. But even strong characters can face challenges and lose their power, so it’s never a sure thing.
It’s common for anime characters to lose their powers, and this can be a really tough experience, whether it’s just for a while or forever. While being strong isn’t the only thing that matters, even in anime, losing the abilities that defined these characters felt like a major setback.
Armin Gained the Colossal Titan in Attack on Titan But Lost It
In Attack on Titan, once someone gains the ability to transform into a Titan, they keep those powers until a Pure Titan consumes them, transferring the abilities to the new host. This happened several times throughout the series, most notably when Armin was eaten by Bertholt Hoover, allowing Armin to inherit the immense power of the Colossal Titan.
In the anime Attack on Titan, Armin briefly possessed the power of the Colossal Titan, but not for the entire 13-year timespan of the story. He lost this ability, along with all other Titan powers, when Eren was defeated. This event restored the Eldians to normal humans, permanently ending their ability to transform into Titans.
Fire Lord Ozai Lost His Firebending in Avatar: The Last Airbender
In Avatar: The Last Airbender, those who can control the elements (benders) can always improve their skills, but they can’t completely lose their abilities, and people who aren’t benders can’t suddenly gain them. There are a few exceptions, like Fire Lord Ozai, who lost his firebending powers after a battle with Avatar Aang. Ozai had attempted to destroy the world, but Aang found a way to take away his abilities during their fight.
Aang directly confronted Ozai’s spirit using a powerful technique called Energybending. It was a risky move that could have harmed Aang, but he succeeded in stripping Ozai of his firebending abilities. With Ozai unable to fight back, he was captured and put in prison.
Gaara Loses His Powers and His Life in Naruto
When Gaara was first introduced in Naruto, he used the power of the One-Tails to make his sand-based attacks incredibly strong. This made him a formidable fighter, capable of transforming into a monstrous beast form, as seen during the attack on the Hidden Leaf Village. But early in Naruto Shippuden, the Akatsuki captured Gaara and extracted the One-Tails from his body.
Because of this event, Gaara initially lost his powers and his life. Chiyo was able to bring him back, but the One-Tails could not be recovered, meaning Gaara had to live without it. Luckily, he still possessed his own sand-based abilities, so he wasn’t left completely defenseless.
Ed Elric Gave Up His Alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Throughout Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Edward Elric relied on a combination of fighting skills and alchemy. Many fans expected him to use alchemy to win the final battle against the villains. Surprisingly, Edward actually defeated Father using only his physical fighting abilities, which made alchemy seem less important in the climax of the series.
He gave up his ability to use alchemy to retrieve his brother’s body. Ed discovered a way to recover what was lost without total sacrifice, and both brothers were healed. Despite no longer being able to perform alchemy, Ed was happy with the outcome.
Deku Lost One For All in My Hero Academia
Watching My Hero Academia, I saw Deku begin as someone without any powers. He then received the amazing ability One For All, completely changing his situation. But even with One For All, taking down Tomura Shigaraki – who possessed the formidable power of All For One – required a completely new approach. It wasn’t enough on its own.
Deku saved the world by willingly giving up his One For All Quirk, a sacrifice no one else could make. Fortunately, thanks to his support suit, he was able to return to action in the final moments of the My Hero Academia manga.
Light Gave Up the Death Note to Trick L
Light Yagami, using his intelligence and the Death Note, seemed invincible as Kira. However, he was eventually challenged by the brilliant detective L. In an attempt to convince everyone he wasn’t Kira, Light surrendered himself and temporarily relinquished the Death Note’s power.
L realized Light had orchestrated the loss of his notebook and memories. With a new Kira already operating, L had no choice but to release Light. Ironically, without his powers or memories, Light found himself genuinely trying to track down and capture Kyosuke Higuchi, unaware that he was actually pursuing his own follower.
Aang Destroyed Yakone’s Bending in The Legend of Korra
In a flashback during The Legend of Korra, the criminal boss Yakone lost his ability to bend the elements when he was defeated by an adult Aang. Yakone was attempting to take control of Republic City’s criminal world and nearly succeeded using his powerful Bloodbending, but Aang ultimately stopped him and permanently stripped him of his bending abilities.
That was just the first part of Yakone’s story; he accomplished far more after losing his bending abilities than Ozai ever did. Instead of being imprisoned like Ozai, Yakone escaped and built a new life in the Water Tribe. There, he married a local woman and had two sons, whom he forced to learn bloodbending and become criminals like himself.
Goku Sometimes Lost His Powers in Dragon Ball
Goku is known as one of the most powerful heroes in shonen anime, constantly finding new ways to increase his strength. But throughout the Dragon Ball series, there have been a few instances where he temporarily lost his abilities. One example is when his tail was removed to stop him from transforming into a Great Ape.
Despite his many victories, Goku has suffered some major setbacks. He once lost his ability to transform into Super Saiyan 3, and even the powerful Ultra Instinct proved too physically demanding for him to maintain, causing him to lose access to it.
Ichigo Wagered His Soul Reaper Powers to Defeat Aizen in Bleach
Throughout the series Bleach, Ichigo Kurosaki constantly developed new abilities, starting when Rukia Kuchiki shared her powers with him. He progressed from gaining a Soul Reaper form and mastering his unique sword, to learning how to control his inner Hollow. However, he eventually hit a plateau and wasn’t strong enough to defeat Sosuke Aizen.
Ichigo’s father, Isshin, began training him after the previous events. With this new training, Ichigo returned with his powerful Mugetsu form and, alongside Kisuke Urahara, used the Final Getsuga Tensho to defeat Aizen. However, using this technique cost Ichigo all of his powers. Despite this significant loss, it was clear his powers wouldn’t be gone for good, and he eventually regained them in time for the next big challenge.
Inuyasha Loses His Powers Once a Month
Unlike most anime heroes who lose their powers just once, Inuyasha frequently loses his. Being half-human, he becomes completely powerless during the full moon, a recurring and embarrassing reminder of his human weakness. He keeps this vulnerability a secret from his enemies, but confides in Kagome and his close friends.
During one adventure, Inuyasha loses his powers, making him an easy target for a demon trying to steal the jewel shards they’ve gathered. He felt helpless being unable to protect his friends, which was very upsetting. This temporary weakness highlights the difference between Inuyasha and his older half-brother, Sesshomaru, who possesses full demonic power.
