- The chess table integrates bamboo scaffolding and Hong Kong milk tea waste into its design
- Fully playable, it merges cultural memory with circular innovation and sustainability
During Milan Design Week 2026, Hong Kong-based studio reEDIT, founded by Jacqueline Chak and Genevieve Chew, showcased its work in Europe for the first time. Their installation, “The Upcycled Gambit — Bamboo & Brew Chess Table Set,” was featured in the No Space for Waste exhibition within Isola Design District. The piece transforms the classic Chinese chess table into a meaningful object that reflects Hong Kong culture and daily life. By using recycled bamboo scaffolding and tea waste, the chess set symbolizes renewal and gives these materials a second purpose, connecting each game played to the city’s history and traditions.
Inspired by the lively public spaces of Hong Kong – where people gather to play games on well-worn park benches – the Chess Table reimagines this community spirit as a beautiful sculpture. It blends traditional Hong Kong culture with sustainable materials. The tabletop features tea leaves from the city’s famous milk tea, and the design incorporates bamboo, referencing the traditional scaffolding techniques still used to build Hong Kong’s skyscrapers. These details create a unique, textured piece that celebrates local heritage alongside modern design.
The installation isn’t just a beautiful display of culture; it also highlights reEDIT’s skill in creating products from recycled materials. The studio handles everything from collecting and sorting waste to processing it with cutting-edge techniques like 3D printing and sheet pressing. The resulting chess set is fully functional and comes with a guide, and visitors can also enjoy interactive experiences like live tea tastings.
