A new LEGO Ideas concept aims to honor Pablo Picasso by recreating his Cubist style in brick form. The set, titled “Pablo Picasso Cubism Art: Great Painter Face,” moves beyond typical LEGO building techniques, using precise mathematical principles to capture the fragmented and multi-angled look of his 1953 artwork. It breaks away from the usual grid-like structure of LEGOs to achieve a more artistic and complex design.
This building set, with 1,117 pieces, measures about 10.7 inches wide, 15.75 inches tall, and 2 inches thick, making it ideal for display. You can choose to build it with or without a grey frame, letting you either hang it on a wall or place it on a desk. The background is created using brightly colored, angled plates that enhance the artwork it’s based on.
The most impressive part of this creation is how strongly it’s built. To match the flowing, uneven lines of the artwork it’s based on, the builder needed to create slopes beyond what standard LEGO pieces easily allow. Instead of using simple swivel joints that would leave the structure unstable, the creator cleverly used geometry. By building right triangles with whole number side lengths (like 3 and 4 to make a slope of 5 studs, or 5 and 12 for a 13-stud slope), the angled lines are firmly connected at both ends. This mathematical technique makes the model incredibly solid and secure, while still capturing the artistic feel of the original painting.
The main portrait comes with a small black baseplate that displays a unique minifigure of the artist. The figure wears a blue shirt and a gray, paint-splattered sweater, and includes a paintbrush with orange paint and a white palette. A brick-built easel completes the scene, and features the only printed piece in the entire set – a tiny version of the original “Great Painter Face” painting.
