The Redondo Beach Pier reopened Sunday afternoon after being briefly closed by police and city officials. Authorities haven’t explained why they asked everyone to leave.
Okay, so around 11 a.m., the Redondo Beach police sent out an alert โ basically, they told people to get out. It was the first official evacuation order, and it went out through the city’s emergency notification system. I remember checking the news and seeing it pop up โ things were starting to get real.
Police are asking everyone near the pier to leave immediately. Catalina Avenue is closed between Torrance Boulevard and Beryl Street. Please avoid the pier area until police give the all-clear.
The department announced at 11:57 a.m. that the pier will stay closed until they announce it can reopen.
At 2:21 p.m., the department announced through the city alert system that the police situation was over and the pier area was reopened to the public.
Redondo Beach Councilmember Brad Waller shared his thoughts on the evacuation by commenting on BeachLife’s original Facebook post announcing the event’s postponement.
A threat was made against the pier, so the area was evacuated while police and K-9 units searched it. The search has now expanded to include the BeachLife festival grounds. Although there was no specific threat to BeachLife, officials are taking extra precautions to ensure the area is safe for attendees. Both the pier and BeachLife have been thoroughly searched with no findings, and BeachLife is expected to open as planned.
The Times has reached out to the Redondo Beach Police Department for more information.
The evacuation happened on the final day of the BeachLife Festival in Redondo Beach. The festival was set to begin at noon and include performances by artists like My Morning Jacket, Peach Pit, Sheryl Crow, and James Taylor.
Just got word from the festival organizers โ looks like things are running a bit behind schedule. They’ve announced on social media that the event won’t kick off until at least an hour later than planned on Sunday. So, if you’re heading there, factor in a delay!
BeachLife announced that doors to the event will open at 1 p.m. instead of the originally scheduled time. This decision was made in coordination with local public safety officials as a precaution due to police activity happening nearby on the Redondo Pier and Torrance Boulevard. BeachLife prioritizes the safety of everyone attending.
The organization announced at 1:43 p.m. that it was cleared to reopen to the public.
Okay, so good news! We just got the all-clear from the local safety team, which means we can finally open the doors! Honestly, waiting was a little nerve-wracking, but everyone’s been super patient. I’m so excited โ it’s gonna be an amazing day with sunshine, fun, and, of course, great music. Can’t wait!
