Everyone’s talking about the pros and cons of streaming, but a real benefit is how it lets people find great movies they might have missed in theaters. This is the case with .
When Jennifer’s Body was released in 2009, during Megan Fox’s peak fame, it didn’t find an audience because it was poorly advertised. However, the film gained a dedicated following years later as people discovered it on streaming services, quickly becoming a hit, as shown by data from FlixPatrol.
When Jennifer’s Body was added to Netflix in May, it quickly became popular. Within two days, the movie reached number five on the streaming charts and stayed there on May 3rd.
Jennifer’s Body Was an Underrated Gem
Despite a promising combination of Megan Fox, Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody, Amanda Seyfried, and director Karyn Kusama, the film Jennifer’s Body didn’t connect with audiences at the time of its release. The marketing focused on Megan Fox’s attractiveness, overshadowing what is now recognized as its feminist themes and revenge horror elements.
The movie centers on Jennifer Check, a high school student possessed by a demon who sustains herself by killing and consuming her male classmates. Her close friend, Anita “Needy” Lesnicki, desperately tries to stop the horrific killings. Beyond the shocking premise, the film explores deeper issues like insecurity, trauma, and a range of complex emotions, portraying Jennifer and Needy as much more than typical high school stereotypes.
Similar to films like Carrie and Ginger Snaps that explore teenage female anger through a supernatural lens and feature physical consequences, Jennifer’s Body eventually found its audience. Despite initially receiving mostly negative reviews – critics gave it a 47% rating and audiences a 36% – the film gained popularity on social media and is now getting the appreciation it deserves.
The Jennifer’s Body Sequel Is Closer Than Ever
You know, when Jennifer’s Body first came out, it didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. But over time, the conversation around it totally shifted – people really started getting it. It’s become a bit of a cult classic, honestly. And now, it’s wild to think they’re actually making a sequel! They don’t have a studio backing it yet, but the screenwriter…
A new installment is in development and will offer a fresh take on the original story. According to producer Yoshinobu Kusama, the rumors about this project are indeed true and currently in progress.
The director expressed strong optimism about the project, saying it will be reimagined in a fresh and exciting way and that they are very enthusiastic about it.
Cody recently discussed the upcoming Jennifer’s Body 2, explaining she had much more creative freedom this time around. Unlike a typical sequel, she wasn’t held back by restrictions she faced on the first film. She described it as letting go and embracing a ‘careless’ approach, which she feels has resulted in a truly excellent movie, expected in 2025.
Jennifer’s Body is available to stream on Netflix.
