A fantastic first season can be both a blessing and a curse for a TV show. While everyone involved – the actors, creators, and studio – hopes for a strong debut and positive reception, it also creates a lot of pressure. It’s unusual for a show with a brilliant first season to continue being great in later seasons, and there are very few shows currently on the air that have remained consistently excellent through season four or five.
While Prime Video’s The Boys is still a great show, later seasons aren’t quite as strong as the first three. Although it hasn’t had any major failures, the story sometimes feels slow, preventing seasons 4 and 5 from reaching the same high level of quality.
At first glance, The Boys and Dragon Ball seem completely different. Aside from both featuring people who can fly and have superpowers, the only real similarity is that the character Hughie has a similar hopeful attitude to a certain Saiyan who loves to eat. However, because fans of both shows overlap, it’s not surprising that people have started combining elements of the two franchises, creating unique fan-made content.
Inspired by a comic book series by Robert Kirkman, Invincible is a unique superhero show that playfully critiques the tropes of Marvel and DC, much like The Boys. Both shows explore complex moral questions and challenge traditional superhero themes. However, Invincible is also increasingly influenced by anime, particularly in its action sequences. As the show’s fourth season began the Viltrumite War storyline, the epic aerial battles and powerful alien warriors felt very similar to those seen in Dragon Ball Z, more so than in any other American TV series.
What’s truly remarkable is that Invincible has consistently delivered high quality across all four of its seasons. The first season gave us a strong introduction to Mark Grayson’s story and culminated in the unforgettable battle between father and son. Season two explored Mark’s life after the events with Nolan and introduced the first major villain, Angstrom Levy. Then, season three boldly dove into a multiverse storyline centered around Mark. And most recently, season four brought the Viltrumite War to the forefront, raising the stakes, ramping up the action, and introducing the formidable Thragg.
While the episode “Hurm” in Invincible season 4 received the lowest ratings so far, the season as a whole delivered a series of strong episodes that successfully resolved plotlines introduced way back in season 1. Considering the show’s run since 2021, every season of Invincible has been consistently excellent.
Can Invincible Season 5 Continue The Streak?
After four impressive seasons, Invincible has proven itself to be a reliable show. However, it’s fair to wonder if season 5 will maintain that quality, as the series is moving beyond its central conflict with Viltrum for the first time. This means the show will need to find new ways to stay compelling.
As a big fan, I’m really seeing things shift in Invincible now that we’re past the halfway point of the comic’s story. The Viltrumites aren’t the all-powerful rulers they used to be, and honestly, it’s thrown everything we thought we knew about the show into question. It feels like season 5 has a lot of work to do figuring out what happens next, and I’m excited (and a little nervous!) to see where they take it.
Luckily, the strong groundwork of Invincible suggests the show can maintain its excellent quality for a long time.
The Invincible TV show closely follows the story of the original comic books, hitting all the major plot points while also making some improvements. Because the show knows where the comic book story is going – with plans for three more seasons to cover the rest of the material – it’s been successful, and this will likely ensure season five stays on course.
It’s common for TV shows based on books or comics to get weaker as they move away from the original source material. We’ve seen this happen with shows like The Umbrella Academy, Game of Thrones, the first season of Preacher, and The Walking Dead. While changes made to The Boys for television have usually been good, straying from the comic book’s storyline has likely caused some of the pacing issues in recent seasons. Even Invincible suffered with its least-liked episode being one created solely for the show. Luckily, Invincible has a clear plan for the future, and if the creators stick to it, fans are optimistic about what’s to come.
