Many negative reviews focused on the film’s plot, though they often praised the acting. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star noted that Hart’s War was a good display of acting talent, even if Bruce Willis wasn’t the strongest performer. However, he felt the story itself, written by Billy Ray and Terry George, was lacking.

Even though it received mixed reactions when it first came out, Hart’s War is now popular on Tubi, showing there’s still an audience for it.
