Bruce Willis is famous for his hit action movies like Die Hard, Armageddon, The Fifth Element, and The Sixth Sense. However, he’s also been in some films that didn’t do well in theaters, such as the 2002 war movie Hart’s War, which is now gaining a new audience on streaming services.
According to FlixPatrol, the World War II movie Hart’s War is currently the ninth most popular film in the United States. While based on the bestselling novel by John Katzenbach, the movie wasn’t a financial success when it first came out, earning only $33.1 million at the box office despite costing $70 million to make.
What Is Hart’s War About?
In the World War II film Hart’s War, Bruce Willis plays Colonel William McNamara. The story centers on Thomas Hart, an American soldier captured by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans attempt to get Hart to reveal vital military secrets, but when questioned by McNamara, Hart insists he didn’t share any information.
Everything changed when two Black pilots showed up at our camp, and then one of them was accused of murder. Luckily, Hart, who’d actually studied law before the war, was asked by McNamara to defend him. The movie, Hart’s War, also stars Bruce Willis, Colin Farrell, Cole Hauser, Adrian Grenier, and a lot of other great actors.
Hart’s War Received Mixed Reviews from Critics
The film garnered a mixed response from both critics and audiences. It currently has a 60% approval rating from critics and a 48% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.4 based on more than 58,000 reviews.
One positive review, from David Ansen of Newsweek, noted that Hart’s War occasionally takes itself too seriously, but praised the well-crafted plot by screenwriters Billy Ray and Terry George, based on a novel by John Katzenbach. Nell Minow of Common Sense Media described it as a large-scale WWII story focusing on themes of honor, bravery, and self-sacrifice.
Many negative reviews focused on the film’s plot, though they often praised the acting. Peter Howell of the Toronto Star noted that Hart’s War was a good display of acting talent, even if Bruce Willis wasn’t the strongest performer. However, he felt the story itself, written by Billy Ray and Terry George, was lacking.
Even though it received mixed reactions when it first came out, Hart’s War is now popular on Tubi, showing there’s still an audience for it. It might not be the greatest war movie ever made, but with its surprising plot twists and strong acting, it continues to entertain viewers more than two decades later.
Hart’s War is available to stream for free on Tubi in the United States.
