Michael Jackson was a superstar for most of his life and usually got whatever he desired. The new film, Michael, reveals that the King of Pop led an extraordinary life, becoming a legendary figure – almost like a myth. He even had a monkey as a close companion.
Despite his incredible success, Michael Jackson had one unfulfilled ambition: he longed to be a movie star. He auditioned for several famous films, but wasn’t cast. He hoped Tim Burton would give him the lead role in Edward Scissorhands, and wanted to play Peter Pan in Steven Spielberg’s Hook. He even pleaded with George Lucas to let him play Jar Jar Binks. Before superhero movies became popular, Jackson envisioned a Spider-Man film and even made a bid to buy Marvel Comics to make it happen.
Michael Jackson Wanted To Be A Marvel Hero
Both Michael Jackson and Marvel Comics faced significant difficulties in the 1990s. Marvel struggled with competition from a new comic book publisher called Image, combined with some bad business choices, eventually leading to bankruptcy. Simultaneously, Michael Jackson was dealing with very serious accusations, including allegations of child abuse. While Jackson’s problems were far more severe, he had the financial resources to manage the fallout, and many people were unwilling to believe the claims against him, which helped him weather the storm. Unlike Marvel, he was able to essentially make the accusations disappear.
Michael Jackson really wanted to be viewed as a hero, and thought playing a superhero would help him achieve that. When James Cameron’s Spider-Man movie began to fall apart, Jackson devised a plan to get involved – he decided he would simply buy Marvel. As Taj Jackson shared on the Popcorned Planet podcast…
I recall my brothers and a colleague discussing the possibility of buying Marvel, ideally with Stan Lee involved. They had several conversations about it, but the deal ultimately fell through. I’m not sure why, but they were definitely working hard to make it happen.
Taj Jackson went on to suggest who his uncle would want to be in the MCU…
He loved Marvel comics, especially Spider-Man. He was familiar with all the characters, and while he wanted to collect everything, he really dreamed of being Spider-Man himself.
The deal ultimately fell through, but Marvel soon entered a hugely successful period for its movies, starting with Blade in 1998 and X-Men in 2000. Then, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2002 became a massive hit. It’s fascinating to imagine what things would be like if Jackson had purchased Marvel and made a Spider-Man movie with himself as the lead. Superhero films likely would have evolved very differently, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it probably wouldn’t exist.
Michael Jackson Had His Eyes On Another Marvel Character As Well
Rumor has it that Michael Jackson really wanted to play Professor X in the first X-Men movie. Luckily, the filmmakers decided against it and chose Patrick Stewart, who almost didn’t take the part! Just like it’s hard to picture Michael Jackson as Spider-Man, it’s difficult to imagine him as the leader of the X-Men – his personality and voice simply didn’t fit the character.
Despite everything, 2008 marked the peak of Marvel’s success with the release of Iron Man. Sadly, a year later, Michael Jackson passed away at age 50 due to a combination of propofol and benzodiazepines. Just two months after that, Disney revealed its intention to acquire Marvel. From that point on, the story became legendary – and I couldn’t resist a little play on words with ‘HIStory’.
