Top Gun 3 Has Unlocked Its Best Chance Of A Series Box Office Record

A third Top Gun movie is now in the works, and it could become the highest-grossing film in the series if it follows the successful formula of Maverick. The original Top Gun, released in 1986, was a huge success and a defining film of the decade. Starring Tom Cruise as the talented but impulsive pilot Maverick, the movie followed his experiences at naval flight school, where his daring behavior and confidence often clashed with authority and his peers.

As a huge movie fan, I remember when the original Top Gun came out in 1986 and made a whopping $357.5 million globally. But honestly, nothing could have prepared me for the incredible success of Top Gun: Maverick over 36 years later! It absolutely blew everyone away and became the second-highest-grossing film of 2022, raking in around $1.5 billion worldwide. And it wasn’t just a box office hit – critics loved it too, giving it a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film even earned six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and thankfully took home the prize for Best Sound.

Tom Cruise returns as Maverick in the new film, where he’s tasked with training a new generation of pilots for a dangerous mission. Among them is Rooster, played by Miles Teller, who is the son of Maverick’s late best friend, Goose, from the original movie. This new team also includes pilots played by Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, Jay Ellis, and Danny Ramirez.

I was thrilled to hear at CinemaCon 2026 that Top Gun 3 is actually happening! Deadline reported that they’re already working on the script, and Tom Cruise is, unsurprisingly, expected to return as Pete Mitchell. Thankfully, Jerry Bruckheimer is also back to produce, which is fantastic news. They didn’t say anything about the rest of the cast from Top Gun: Maverick though. It’ll be interesting to see if they can get everyone back – a lot of those actors have become huge stars since 2022, and having them return could really help the movie at the box office.

Top Gun 3 Can Bring Back Many Of Maverick’s Cast Members Who Have Become Bigger Stars Since 2022

Nearly four years after the release of Top Gun: Maverick, several of the actors who played the young pilots have become major stars. Glen Powell, who played Hangman, is arguably the most prominent. Since Maverick, he’s appeared in a number of films, including Anyone But You, Hit-Man, How To Make A Killing, The Running Man, and Twisters. He’s also recently lent his voice to the Nintendo character Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Lewis Pullman, known for roles in films like Salem’s Lot and The Testament of Ann Lee, recently appeared as Sentry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts and will return for Avengers: Doomsday. He’s also joining the cast of the new Spaceballs movie. Meanwhile, Ramirez, who played Fanboy, will also be in Doomsday, taking on the role of the new Falcon after appearing in Captain America: Brave New World.

Carla Gugino, who played Phoenix, was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, and recently appeared in Crime 101. Meanwhile, Emma Ellis, who played Payback, has also been featured in projects like Freaky Tales and the Peacock series All Her Fault. Both actresses have gained significant recognition since their time in Maverick, and the upcoming Top Gun 3 should capitalize on their continued success and bring them back to the franchise.

Could Top Gun 3 Be An Even Bigger Hit Than Maverick?

It’s a tall order for any movie to surpass the massive $1.5 billion Maverick earned worldwide, but Top Gun 3 has potential. Maverick succeeded by attracting both fans of the original movie and a new, younger audience. The third film could appeal to multiple generations as well, especially if it reunites the cast from the second film.

A potential concern is that the director of the first two films, Joseph Kosinski, might not return for the third installment. A change in director could affect the quality, potentially leading to lower ticket sales. However, with Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer still involved, there’s still hope for a successful film.
