Mel C, 52, reveals how she maintains her incredibly ripped physique and says her fellow Spice Girls ‘disliked exercise’ during band’s heyday as ‘we were all nervous about getting bulky – the aesthetic was very slim’

Mel C revealed the keys to her toned and muscular body, explaining that staying fit is central to her identity.

Melanie Chisholm, best known as Sporty Spice, is 52 years old and has famously stayed in incredible shape for decades, continuing to prioritize fitness even now.

Mel turned heads when the cover of her new album, Sweat, was revealed. She showcased a remarkably fit body, posing in a striking red and navy leotard and looking more like a powerful warrior than a typical pop singer.

In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the singer shared her strength training routine, explaining that it’s helped her feel confident and happy with her body.

She shared the secret to her fit physique: she lifts weights three times a week and gets her cardio through spin classes or riding her Peloton bike.

Mel mentioned she aims to run once a week, but has to watch her mileage because her joints aren’t what they used to be.

This talented musician prioritizes her fitness, even with a hectic travel schedule. She shared that she packs resistance bands and a jump rope when she tours, allowing her to work out no matter where she is.

She also praised exercising before performances, explaining it’s become a regular part of her pre-show routine. This typically involves a quick stretch and some light weightlifting at the gym.

After fans were amazed by the artwork and video for her album, Sweat, Mel explained she’d actually spent a lot more time preparing for the shoot than she normally does.

She explained she’d been meticulously tracking her diet and working out twice a day – once doing cardio and once lifting weights – for two weeks. However, she emphasized that this intense schedule wasn’t sustainable long-term, stating, ‘I don’t maintain that physique all the time.’

I’ve noticed she’s really committed to fitness these days, but she’s always been that way, honestly. It’s so fun to learn little things like she and Geri used to be gym buddies back in the Spice Girls days! Can you imagine those two working out together during all the craziness? It’s a sweet little memory she shared.

Mel revealed that she was the most dedicated to fitness among the Spice Girls, explaining that some of the other members only started enjoying exercise later in their careers.

She explained that when she and Geri were younger, some people would prefer to sleep in instead of going to the gym. She also mentioned that some of the Spice Girls didn’t enjoy exercise at the time, but have since started to appreciate it as they’ve gotten older.

Mel admitted there was a lot of pressure on the girls to be very thin, rather than build muscle. She explained, ‘We were all worried about getting too bulky; the look we were aiming for was very slim.’

The DJ has openly discussed her difficulties with body image during her time in the band. Being constantly watched by the public and unfairly labeled as ‘the unattractive one’ took a toll on her.

In her 2022 autobiography, she shared how she started limiting her food intake and struggled with food-related problems, as well as becoming overly focused on exercise, all in an attempt to feel in control.

By the year 2000, she was completely overwhelmed, having previously admitted she’d developed a pattern of binge eating but hadn’t realized it was a disorder.

Mel eventually got professional help and was diagnosed with both clinical depression and an eating disorder. This diagnosis was a crucial step towards getting better.

Now in her fifties, the actress says she’s more confident with her body than ever before. She feels empowered by her fit physique and muscular arms, explaining that she’s always valued strength.

She explained that reaching the age of 50 felt significant, and that it’s liberating to worry less about what others think. She added that she wanted to document her experiences before time passes.

It’s great that strength training is now widely recognized for its benefits, especially as we age. Lifting weights not only makes us physically stronger, but also boosts our mental wellbeing, giving us a confident and capable mindset.

Mel will release her new studio album, Sweat, on May 1st, and will follow it up with a world tour starting in September. The tour will include shows in North America, Europe, and Australia.

She recently spoke about the possibility of a Spice Girls tour, mentioning that she regularly talks to the other members of the group.

She hinted at a possible reunion, telling Stellar magazine that it’s something she’d really like to happen someday.

We care deeply about what we’ve built, and sometimes that makes us hesitant to act, because we’re afraid of making a mistake.

We played some incredible stadium shows in the UK in 2019, but unfortunately Victoria Beckham couldn’t join us. I always tell her she really missed something special and needs to see it for herself.

We’re still in discussions, and we’re hoping we can find a way to do something special to honor the Spice Girls in the future.
