Siobhan Finneran’s tense thriller branded a “must watch” jumps to top of Netflix’s trending chart

The new Netflix thriller, Unchosen, is currently the most popular series in the UK, topping the ‘Top 10’ chart.

The series centers on the Fellowship, a secluded religious group in the countryside where women are expected to obey the men. When a stranger arrives, it sets off a series of surprising revelations and threatens to expose the strange truth behind their way of life.

The show features Molly Windsor, known from Three Girls, Asa Butterfield from Sex Education, Fra Free of Hawkeye, Christopher Eccleston who starred in 28 Days Later, and Siobhan Finneran from Happy Valley.

Viewers generally like the show more than critics do. It currently has a 57% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on seven reviews.

Metro praised the series, calling it a ‘must-watch’ and predicting viewers will want to watch all the episodes at once. They also highlighted actress Finneran, saying she was brilliant in every scene she appeared in.

According to The Telegraph, Unchosen had the potential to be a compelling drama, with standout performance by Windsor. However, the review noted the show unfortunately veers into predictable thriller tropes, including a car chase and an implausible kidnapping.

The Irish Independent agreed, noting that Unchosen began well but soon became overly dramatic and then shifted into a ridiculous thriller with a focus on a psycho-killer.

The Guardian described the film as mildly enjoyable but not particularly memorable, suggesting viewers might find better ways to spend their time. They criticized the script as being merely competent and the characters as feeling like tools used to advance the plot rather than fully developed individuals.

Stephen Finneran will be back for a third season of the acclaimed BAFTA-winning series Time, and the show has also added some new actors to the cast.

Unchosen is now streaming on Netflix.
