Chris Hemsworth is famous for playing Thor in the Marvel movies. Now, he’s topping streaming charts with the crime thriller Crime 101. Though the film didn’t do well in theaters, it’s found a new audience on Prime Video.
According to FlixPatrol, Crime 101 is now the second most popular movie on Prime Video globally, climbing one spot in the rankings. It’s become a hit in many countries, including Argentina, Canada, Denmark, Italy, and Mexico, and is currently the top movie in Austria, Brazil, and Germany.
The film is currently the second most-watched movie on Prime Video in the United States. This is notable because it didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $72.7 million despite costing $90 million to make. That was unexpected, given its impressive cast including Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Halle Berry.
What Is Crime 101 About?
Mike is a careful and clever thief who’s been pulling off heists all over Los Angeles without leaving a trace – he never leaves DNA and doesn’t harm anyone. Detective Lou Lubesnick is determined to catch him, while Sharon, an insurance broker, is working hard to prove her worth and get the recognition she deserves.
Each of the three friends is feeling unhappy with their job. Mike wants to try for one last success before retiring, and Sharon is considering helping him by sharing valuable information that could lead to a large payout. At the same time, Lou is wrestling with a difficult decision about whether to become involved in corruption at work.
The cast of Crime 101 includes Nick Nolte, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Barbaro, Corey Hawkins, Tate Donovan, and Paul Adelstein, among others. The series is adapted from a novella featured in Don Winslow’s 2020 book, Broken, a collection of six short stories.
Crime 101 Received Positive Reviews from Critics
Critics generally loved the film, giving it an 88% rating on the Tomatometer. Audiences also enjoyed it, with an 85% score on the Popcornmeter. Scott Tobias of The Reveal praised the movie, awarding it 3.5 out of 5 stars and calling it a rare and welcome well-made crime film.
In a review for The Travers Take, Peter Travers praised the film, highlighting Chris Hemsworth’s performance and a strong supporting cast. He noted the movie, while following a familiar heist formula, remains engaging, and singled out Halle Berry’s satisfying smile at the climax as a particularly enjoyable moment, predicting audiences will share the feeling.
The movie Crime 101 may not have gotten much attention before its release, which could have affected how well it did in theaters. It also faced strong competition from other films that came out at the same time, such as Wuthering Heights, even though other movies were dominating the box office charts.
Crime 101 is available to stream on Prime Video.
