Suzy Eddie Izzard says she is open to having an ADHD test after being told her trans identity could be linked to neurodevelopmental disorder

Suzy Eddie Izzard is considering getting tested for ADHD. Someone suggested there might be a connection between her identity as a gender fluid trans woman and the neurodevelopmental condition.

I’ve been a huge fan of Izzard for years – she’s seriously one of the funniest and most gifted comedians around. She’s always been open about her identity, and now, since 2023, she’s proudly using the name Suzy and prefers she/her pronouns. It’s fantastic to see her living authentically and continuing to make people laugh.

She now wonders if the qualities that led to her success might be connected to ADHD, something she’s never been evaluated for before.

During a recent appearance on the “I’m ADHD! No You’re Not” podcast with Paul Whitehouse and Dr. Mine Conkbayir, comedian Eddie Izzard, 64, said she believes she has ADHD. She came to this conclusion after being presented with a list of common ADHD traits, including thinking creatively, being able to focus intensely, and quickly spotting patterns.

As a long-time follower of Conkbayir’s work, I was particularly struck by their insights on how breaking free from traditional gender roles can really impact a person’s sense of self. They explained that when people aren’t as pressured to fit into what society expects based on gender, it can actually lead to a more fluid and less defined sense of who they are – and that’s something I’ve observed a lot in the community.

‘So for me, I was picturing you as Edward, but then to Ed and now Susie Eddy.’

According to Conkbayir, an average fifty percent of those diagnosed with dyslexia also have ADHD.

Izzard explained that professionals like the people present could evaluate them and identify specific qualities and characteristics.

‘Because the people came to me when I was doing stand-up and said, “I think you’re dyslexia.”

Izzard has explained that she continues to play roles as straight men or transgender characters because the discussion around gender has become overly political and fraught with difficulty – a real ‘minefield,’ as she put it.

In 2024, she told The Telegraph that she believes women’s rights and transgender rights are both fundamental human rights, and that everyone needs to coexist peacefully.

I’m a strong advocate for women’s rights, but I avoid debates about whether biology dictates gender roles – those discussions are too complicated and often unproductive. I prefer to focus on moving forward.

‘I don’t think I’m doing any harm to anyone.’

The comedian has publicly defended J.K. Rowling and feminists who believe biological sex is the primary factor in defining gender.

Eddie Izzard first publicly described herself as a transvestite in 1985, but has said she’s known since childhood – around the age of four – that she wanted to be a girl.

She shared that she waited until right before publicly announcing her gender identity to tell her father.

Eddie Izzard was born in Aden (now part of Yemen) in 1962. When she was seven years old, her family moved to Bexhill, a coastal town in East Sussex, England.

Okay, so I’ve been following her for ages, and she’s always talked about being into women, which is amazing! And I just found out her last relationship was with Sarah Townsend, the singer? Seriously, Sarah Townsend! I knew she had good taste, but wow. I’m totally obsessed with learning everything about her life, and this is just… perfect.

Speaking on the Rosebud podcast with Gyles Brandreth, she shared that she’d love to have children someday, but isn’t focused on it right now, adding that you never know what the future holds.

I’m a transgender woman who is exclusively attracted to women. I’ve always been this way – I’ve never been interested in boys or men.

Izzard shared that she’s currently enjoying being single and isn’t focused on finding a relationship, as she’s content with her own company.

She explained that she doesn’t plan to pursue many relationships. She acknowledged that dating can be complicated, especially as a transgender person, but she’s content being single and enjoying her own company.

I’m currently happy with my job and not actively searching for a new one. However, I’d definitely be open to considering an opportunity if it felt like a great fit.

She added that while she wasn’t currently going to clubs, she still thought it was possible to meet someone special there if they had a connection.

I’m ADHD! No You’re Not is available on all podcast platforms every Thursday.
