Ticketmaster promises to refund fans who were cheated out of tickets to Harry Styles’ New York City concerts. They discovered a large-scale operation where tickets were being illegally resold, and are working to get those tickets back into the hands of genuine fans.
The company discovered people were reselling tickets to Harry Styles’ ‘Together, Together’ tour for inflated prices. They were doing this by using many fake online accounts to purchase the tickets in the first place.
Fans were upset earlier this year when special VIP packages for the 30-night concert series at Madison Square Garden reached a high price of $1,667, and this new development follows that situation.
Ticketmaster president Saumil Mehta addressed the scandal in a lengthy message to fans.
He explained ‘how ticketing actually works’ and what went wrong.
We identified and stopped ticket scalpers who were using fake accounts and identities to bypass purchase limits and resell tickets at inflated prices.
We’ve cancelled the tickets, and since none of them had been resold to other fans, we’re working with the tour organizers to make them available again at the original price.
He explained that the scammers specifically targeted the least expensive and most popular tickets, because they knew they could resell them at a much higher price.
He added: ‘This impacts many tours and Harry’s residency was a huge target.’
As a huge fan, I was so relieved to hear directly from Mehta about the ticket situation! He laid out exactly what people are paying, including all the fees, and it’s actually pretty reasonable – 19% are around $50, most – 77% – are under $95, and thankfully everything is under $130. The best part is he made it clear that no real fans have had their tickets cancelled. If you bought directly from Ticketmaster, or if you already transferred or resold your tickets, you’re totally safe – nothing to worry about!
If you didn’t get tickets yet, you can try again by filling out a request form between noon EDT on April 30th and 5pm EDT on May 1st.
You can ask for as many as eight tickets total – up to four for each of two different shows. If your request is approved, you’ll be charged automatically.
Confirmation emails will go out by May 8 at 11.50pm.
This action comes shortly after a court found that Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation, control too much of the live concert market – a ruling Live Nation plans to fight.
Harry is taking his Together Together tour around the world with plans to perform at multiple locations in each city, resulting in a total of 50 shows.
The tour features a record-breaking 12 nights at London’s Wembley Stadium.
Taylor Swift’s 15 concerts in the UK this year brought in almost £1 billion, while Prince Harry is only performing in London.
The city will greatly benefit financially from the spending of his fans.
The Centre for Economics and Business Research estimates that over one million event attendees will spend a total of £709 million, with a significant portion of that going towards ticket purchases.
