I was so excited to hear from Jon Favreau, the wonderful actor who played Happy Hogan! But sadly, he’s confirmed he won’t be returning for the next movie. It seems the way No Way Home ended is the reason – it’s really a shame, as I always loved his character.
Jon Favreau recently explained on Jimmy Kimmel Live! why his character, Happy Hogan, won’t be in the upcoming Brand New Day. He was on the show to talk about The Mandalorian and Grogu when he revealed that Happy has lost his memory. According to Favreau, Doctor Strange erased Happy’s (and everyone else on Earth-616’s) memories of Peter Parker to safeguard the multiverse.
As the discussion went on, Jon Favreau appeared to get mixed up about the memory loss in No Way Home. He stated, “I’m not part of [it], he doesn’t remember me anymore,” implying he thought Peter Parker had forgotten Happy Hogan, rather than the other way around.
Favreau admitted he wasn’t sure if he’d work with the person again, recalling the last time ended with them being left out of the project. He’s now unaware of what’s happening with the new iteration, and if he’s involved, he feels time is running short, he stated.
Happy Hogan Has Been a Mainstay in the MCU Since Iron Man
Jon Favreau has played the role of Happy Hogan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since its start, first appearing in the 2008 film Iron Man, which he also directed. He reprised his role in Iron Man 2 (2010) and Iron Man 3 (2013), both of which he also directed, and then starred in the first three Spider-Man movies: Homecoming (2017), Far From Home (2019), and No Way Home (2021). He also appeared in Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), and provided the voice for different versions of Happy Hogan in the Disney+ series What If…?.
Happy Hogan was a key figure in the Spider-Man movies within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, acting as a trusted friend and guide to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. Although he won’t be appearing, the new film Brand New Day will still include familiar faces like Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds.
I’m so excited to see Michael Mando return as Mac Gargan! It’s been a really long nine years since we first saw him in Homecoming, and I can’t believe we’re finally going to see him fully transform into the Scorpion in Brand New Day. As a fan, I’ve been waiting for this for ages!
Beyond actors who’ve previously played Spider-Man, the new Brand New Day story will also include Mark Ruffalo and Jon Bernthal returning as their popular Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, Bruce Banner/Hulk and Frank Castle/Punisher.
When Is Brand New Day Set in the MCU?
The new Spider-Man comic, Brand New Day, is set four years after the events of No Way Home. The story follows Peter Parker, who has been working as Spider-Man full-time in a New York City that has forgotten who he is. As the demands on Spider-Man increase, Peter begins to physically change in ways that could endanger him, according to the official description.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled to hit theaters on July 31.
