“Enjoyable” returning Yorkshire-set period drama that was a “smash-hit” unveils exciting trailer

The period drama The Hardacres, set in Yorkshire, is coming back for a second season. A new trailer shows the ongoing conflict between established families and those with newly acquired wealth.

Inspired by CL Skelton’s Hardacre novels, this period drama tells the story of a Yorkshire family who rise from poverty to wealth. They start by working hard as fish gutters and eventually become estate owners thanks to a fortunate investment.

The popular series, created by Amy Roberts and Loren McLaughlan, returns this spring with its second season. Set in 1895, the new episodes follow the Hardacre family as they navigate a world changing with the arrival of electricity – and face some new challenges along the way.

The new trailer suggests Mary, Sam, and their kids will have to work together to deal with the challenges of a wealthy community, especially when Lady Imelda Hansen shows up and makes it clear she wants to thwart the Hardacres.

Lady Imelda tells her daughter, Lady Emma, that she intends to punish them severely as a message to anyone who believes money can grant them status or respect.

In the episode, Mary dedicates herself to providing educational opportunities for dockworkers. Meanwhile, a conflict between Sam and Joe (played by Adam Little) regarding the family business could cause Joe to make rash decisions.

After a heartbreak in the first season, Liza (Shannon Lavelle) meets an attractive man unexpectedly. Meanwhile, Harry (Zak Ford-Williams) starts to reconsider dropping out of school thanks to a motivating new teacher.

Mary’s mother, Ma (played by Julie Graham), is set to form an unlikely connection with Lady Imelda while fiercely competing against her in a card game. She’s determined to win!

Holly Sturton and Owen Roe will reprise their roles as Lady Adella and Lord George Fitzherbert, respectively, from the first season. Ingrid Craigie, Sarah Agha, and Taheen Modak are also returning as Mrs. Dryden, Betsy Hardacre, and Callum Saunders.

Joining Dotrice as Lady Imelda in the second season are Niall McNamee, known for his role in Bad Sisters, as Edward Blackwood, and Edward Mitchell as Arthur Lewis.

When The Hardacres debuted in 2024, critics had varying opinions. Decider described it as a pleasant historical drama, while The Daily Telegraph recommended viewers approach it as a classic, old-style television show rather than something aiming for strict realism.

The Hardacres season 2 premieres on 5 this spring. Season 1 is available on 5’s streaming service.
