A show focused on the Sith, a powerful group from Star Wars, is unexpectedly gaining popularity on streaming services almost two years after it first appeared. Dave Filoni’s animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, has consistently been among the top 10 most-watched shows on Disney+ in the US and around the world. This success is building excitement for the upcoming Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is coming next month. But that’s not the only Star Wars content getting attention right now.
Disney+’s most recent Star Wars series, The Acolyte, has entered the US Top 10 TV chart at number 9 as of April 22nd, joining Maul – Shadow Lord and other shows like Vanderpump Villa, Zootopia+, and Locker Diaries: Zombies. Both Maul – Shadow Lord and The Acolyte focus on characters connected to the Sith. Similar to Maul, Manny Jacinto’s character in The Acolyte is a strong dark side Force user who is looking for a student and a way to become independent from his previous mentors.
Whether intentional or not, the new show’s story shares similarities with Shadow Lord, potentially sparking viewers’ interest in the Sith and the dark side of the Force. While The Acolyte doesn’t offer easy answers, it delves into the core of what it means to be a Sith, explains the Rule of Two, and highlights the weaknesses within the Jedi Order. Set about 100 years before the prequel movies, during the final years of the High Republic, The Acolyte is also one of the more straightforward Star Wars shows Disney+ has produced – but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to ensure its success.
The Acolyte Never Lived Up To Its Full Potential
I have to say, even though Shadow Lord and The Acolyte share some things in common, I’m really surprised The Acolyte is finding a second life on streaming. When it first came out on Disney+ in the summer of 2024, it split fans pretty badly. Honestly, the negativity the actors and people working on the show faced was awful, but beyond that, the series just had some problems with its characters and story that it couldn’t overcome.
Despite being only eight episodes long, Leslye Headland’s show tried to cover too much ground. While the ideas—including the murder mystery, the origins of Osha and Mae’s powers, the Stranger’s Jedi connection, the conflict between the Jedi and the witches, and the unusual bond between Osha and the Stranger—were all interesting, the short season didn’t allow enough time to fully explore them and make them truly resonate. The large cast of Jedi also felt underdeveloped.
Despite its stunning visuals and action sequences, The Acolyte suffered from a confusing story, characters that didn’t feel fully developed, and a lack of strong emotional impact. While a second season could have addressed these problems, the show was officially canceled after just one season – making it the first Star Wars streaming series to meet this fate. Low ratings and a very expensive production cost – around $230 million – likely contributed to the decision.
Star Wars Isn’t Completely Done With The Acolyte
Even though The Acolyte didn’t perform well on streaming platforms, Lucasfilm is still expanding the story and characters introduced in the series. Since the show’s cancellation, several companion books and novels have been released, including The Art of Star Wars: The Acolyte by Kristin Braver, Star Wars: The Acolyte Visual Guide by Pablo Hidalgo, The Acolyte: Wayseeker by Justina Ireland, The Acolyte: The Crystal Crown by Tessa Gratton, and a comic book focusing on the Wookiee Jedi, Kelnacca, created by Cavan Scott and Marika Cresta.
Although it’s doubtful we’ll see more live-action episodes of The Acolyte on Disney+, the show’s story could continue in other ways. Animation is a key part of Star Wars, and Disney+ is already being used for smaller, character-driven stories within the franchise. New seasons of Dave Filoni’s animated Star Wars Tales series – perhaps focusing on the Sith or the High Republic era – could be a great way to revisit compelling characters from The Acolyte.
As a longtime Star Wars fan, I always remember Luke Skywalker’s line from The Last Jedi – “No one’s ever really gone.” And it’s true, especially in a galaxy far, far away where characters have a knack for reappearing! Now, with The Acolyte gaining traction on streaming, I’m thinking we might see some of its faces show up in other Star Wars stories before we know it. It’s exciting to think about how this renewed interest could expand their roles in the wider universe.
