Next week, the 2010 animated movie directed by Zack Snyder will no longer be available on HBO Max. The fantasy adventure tells the story of a young barn owl who is captured by the evil Pure Ones, and features a voice actor known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole is leaving HBO Max
Starting April 30, 2026, the animated film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, starring Hugo Weaving, will no longer be available to stream on HBO Max, according to The Direct.
As a big fantasy fan, I was excited to see Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole brought to life! It’s based on a really popular series of books by Kathryn Lasky – there are sixteen in total! But the movie focuses on the first three: The Capture, The Journey, and The Rescue. Zack Snyder directed it, with a script by John Orloff and Emil Stern. And the animation is absolutely gorgeous – it was all done by the talented team at Animal Logic in Australia.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole follows Soren, a young barn owl who loves hearing tales of the brave Guardians of Ga’Hoole. When his brother, Kludd, becomes envious of Soren’s quick learning in flight, he tries to sabotage him, causing both of them to fall from a tree. They are then captured by the Pure Ones, a group of cruel owls. While Kludd embraces their harsh ways, Soren manages to escape and begins a journey to find the legendary Guardians.
The film boasts a talented voice cast, including Hugo Weaving, famous for playing Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger, as Noctus. Jim Sturgess voices Soren, and Helen Mirren plays Nyra. Geoffrey Rush, Joel Edgerton, and Anthony LaPaglia also lend their voices to the film as Ezylryb, Metalbeak, and Twilight, respectively, alongside other notable actors.
The movie was first released in U.S. cinemas in 2010. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it an average rating of 52%, while audiences scored it higher at 64%. Many praised the film’s stunning visuals, though some felt the story didn’t flow smoothly. It earned over $140 million worldwide during its time in theaters (according to Box Office Mojo).
