Sandra Bullock says she ‘won’t sacrifice’ her family time as she gives a rare insight into raising two children alone after the tragic death of long-term partner Bryan Randall

Sandra Bullock prioritizes her duties as a single parent over the challenges of making popular movies.

The Academy Award-winning actress is raising her two children, 16-year-old Louis and 12-year-old Laila, by herself. This comes after the heartbreaking loss of her partner, Bryan Randall, who passed away from ALS in 2023.

Sandra Bullock, 61, paused her acting career to care for her husband, Randall, while he was ill. Now, she plans her work around her children’s school breaks.

The actress is back in the news with the upcoming film Practical Magic 2, and she admits she likely wouldn’t have returned as the widowed witch Sally Owens if the movie hadn’t been scheduled around her availability.

Honestly, making this movie just worked with the kids being on break. There was no way I was going to miss out on that time with them, absolutely not. It was important to me to be there, you know? Family first, always. I’m so glad I could make it all happen and still be present for my kids – it means the world to me!

They’d probably be relieved if I left, but I wouldn’t want that. It’s just the truth. And honestly, I can’t focus on my work when my kids are having a hard time and I can’t help them.

I’m focused on raising my own children, and I’m fortunate to be able to do that while working in this industry. Many others aren’t so lucky.

I get how frustrating it is to feel stuck at work, like you’re just going through the motions and not truly fulfilled. But the truth is, women are capable of handling those feelings and still getting the job done.

‘We can do fifteen things at one time and get it done.’Ā

Sandra Bullock is back in the spotlight with Practical Magic 2, reuniting her with Nicole Kidman. This marks her first public appearance for a project in four years, beginning with a promotional event at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this April.

According to a source at PEOPLE, she needed time to focus on self-care after her difficult experience with Bryan.

She focused on recovering, spending quality time with her children and creating a stable home life. She wanted to make sure everyone was settled and doing well before she returned to work.

Sandra Bullock explained to Good Morning America that she took a break in 2022 because she wanted to focus on being fully present in her life and didn’t want to commit to projects that would take her away from that.

Honestly, everything revolves around my family for me. I just need to be with them. It’s tough, because my work often pulls me away for hours and hours each day, and I hate missing out on time with them. I really try to prioritize what truly matters, and that’s being present for my family, not spreading myself thin doing a million different things.

I bring my kids with me constantly, but it means incredibly long days. By the time I get home, if I’m working on a project, I’m still on the phone. It’s hard for them because they don’t get much time with me.

She explained that before her children, her life felt directionless, like she was hurrying towards a goal that wasn’t really there. Now, she feels content and wouldn’t trade her current life for anything.

She is survived by her partner’s daughter, 31-year-old Skylar Staten Randall. Skylar previously experienced the loss of both her mother, Janine Staten, and her grandmother, Perri Johnson, who both passed away in 2007.

Sandra Bullock first connected with photographer Bryan Randall in 2015 when she hired him to photograph her son’s fifth birthday party.

In a 2021 interview with Facebook’s Red Table Talk, she revealed she’d found the love of her life. They have three children together—her two, and his older daughter—and she described it as ‘the best thing ever.’

The award-winning actress was delighted to find love again after her difficult divorce from Jesse James in 2010. They had been married for almost five years when she discovered he was unfaithful.

Oh my gosh, you guys, it’s HAPPENING! Practical Magic 2 is finally hitting theaters! I’ve been waiting forever, and it’s officially coming out in the UK and the US on September 18th. I’ve already marked my calendar – I’m going to be first in line!
