Carol McGiffin has admitted she wishes she hadn’t married her first husband, Chris Evans, explaining she didn’t even like him for much of their relationship.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m always fascinated by relationships, and it’s interesting to hear honesty about them. Recently, a well-known TV personality revealed something quite candid about her past marriage. She and a famous DJ were married for seven years, from 1991 to 1998, but she’s now admitted she’s never quite understood why they got married in the first place! It just goes to show, even when things seem right on paper, sometimes the deeper reasons are…well, a mystery!
Carol has openly criticized her former partner, accusing them of manipulation and claiming she was essential to the relationship. She’s stated that they only married because the romance moved too quickly and carried them away.
Honestly, I was really struck by what she said about Chris. She admitted she’d been suspecting him of cheating, but she just couldn’t bring herself to talk to him about it. She explained it was because she’d already made up her mind – she knew the marriage was over, and didn’t want to continue the relationship, so confronting him felt pointless.
I’m not trying to justify any wrongdoing, and I’ve always been faithful in relationships. But honestly, considering I’ve been single for most of my life, this situation – being ‘Suddenly Single’ – feels pretty familiar.
Out of the few serious relationships I’ve had, there was only one where I felt like the other person truly reciprocated my feelings.
She shared on the Suddenly Single podcast that, looking back, it was her first marriage and she ultimately didn’t want to stay married. She admitted she wasn’t even sure why they’d gotten married in the first place.
Looking back, it was a clear error in judgment. I wasn’t sure what he was doing when I wasn’t around, and honestly, I didn’t much care. For a long time, I simply didn’t like him.
‘People get past being cheated on, let me say that.’
Carol and Chris were married for two years before separating, but their divorce wasn’t official until 1998.
The celebrity later admitted the marriage was a mistake. In a 2019 appearance on Loose Women, they explained they’d been carried away with the moment and had mistakenly believed they couldn’t live without their partner.
Looking back, it’s clear he was incredibly controlling. People often assume I married him for his wealth, which is so frustrating! The truth is, I was actually the wealthier one when we got together. It had absolutely nothing to do with his money.
He completely depended on me, and I’m actually relieved things didn’t turn out perfectly. I stuck with it and really tried to make our relationship succeed.
This isn’t the first time Carol has publicly criticized her former husband. Back in 2010, she talked extensively about being unsure why they ever got married, famously referring to him as a ‘ginger tsunami’.
She admitted to the Daily Mail that while she doesn’t regret it, she’s reluctant to acknowledge that she once became a very different person – someone who was overly dependent, acted foolishly, and was unrecognizable from who she was before the relationship.
‘Chris was like a Class A drug and I was well and truly addicted.
I first met him in 1988 while working as a producer at the Music Box cable TV channel. He was visiting to gather information for a story on our channel for his radio show in Manchester.
He walked into the office, noticeably tall with strikingly bright orange hair, but it was his incredibly confident walk that really caught my eye.
Talking about how they weren’t suited, she said: ‘We argued all the time. Our rows were pathetic.
He’d already bought one deodorant, and this was the second one since we started living together eight months ago.
He acted like he’d done something amazing by purchasing it, so I pointed out he could have just as easily bought everyday items he regularly uses, like toothpaste.
He flew into a rage and hurled a can across the room, shattering four cassette cases near my bed. The next morning, he spitefully squeezed the remaining toothpaste down the toilet. It was a childish and sad display.
Despite a previous divorce, Carol married Mark Cassidy in Thailand in 2018, but they waited a year before sharing the news publicly.
Chris and Billie Piper secretly married after a fast-moving, six-month romance. Their relationship drew attention due to their 16-year age difference.
Chris and Billie separated in 2005 and finalized their divorce in 2007, but they’ve stayed close friends. Chris even went to Billie’s wedding when she married Laurence Fox, who she is now divorced from.
Sources told The Mirror in 2016 that Billie leaned on Chris following her divorce from Laurence.
They revealed: ‘She’s been leaning on Chris as the marriage began to go wrong. He’s her soulmate.
‘He’s very protective of her and when there’s a problem Billie will always turn to Chris.’
Chris and golfer Natasha Shishmanian got married in 2007. They were introduced by a mutual friend, Ronan Keating, in 2005.
The couple have four children – Noah, 17, Eli, 13, and twins Walt and Boo, seven.
Natasha and her husband welcomed their first son, Noah Nicholas Martin Evans, in February 2009. Three years later, in June 2012, they had their second son, Eli Alfred Michael Evans.
Eli was born through IVF treatment following a life-threatening ectopic pregnancy Natasha had in 2010. Their twins, born in 2018, were also conceived using IVF.
Chris became a grandfather in January 2015 when his daughter, Jade (from a previous relationship with Alison Ward), had a son named Teddy.
