Jack Quaid’s Sci-Fi Thriller Companion Turns Into HBO Max Streaming Hit 1 Year Later

While most people recognize Jack Quaid from his starring role as Huey in the popular Prime Video series alongside Antony Starr, another one of his projects is quietly gaining a lot of attention from viewers: a film called Companion.

This science fiction thriller was one of four movies Quaid appeared in during 2025. Following the release, the prolific and talented actor chose to step away from film roles once more.

Recently, the film Companion saw a surge in popularity thanks to the strong connection between Josh and Sophie Thatcher’s character, Iris, the android companion. This helped the movie climb back into HBO Max’s top 10, a full year after its release. Plus, according to FlixPatrol, Companion is currently a top-10 hit on Netflix in multiple countries.

Jack Quaid’s Companion Is Dominating HBO Max Streaming

Directed by Drew Hancock (known for My Dead Ex), and starring Quaid and Hatcher, Companion was a standout thriller in 2025. It offered a refreshing take on the growing trend of relying on artificial intelligence, questioning both its direct applications and the broader implications of our dependence on it.

Technology isn’t good or bad in itself, it depends on how we use it,” explained Quaid, discussing a theme in the film. His character begins as a sensitive man simply looking for connection. However, it’s later revealed that Josh has disturbing and malicious intentions.

The actor explained to Collider that audiences generally recognize Josh isn’t a good person from the start. He focused on developing Josh’s backstory, almost like a meditative exercise where he tried to see the world from the character’s perspective. Ultimately, he realized Josh is driven by a deep lack of affection – he’s someone who may have never truly experienced being told ‘I love you,’ which explains his terrible behavior.

Companion Is A Bloody Lesson About AI, Human Frailty

The film Companion earned almost $37 million at the box office in 2025. This success was due to its relatively low $10 million production budget, as well as overwhelmingly positive reviews – it received a 93% rating from critics and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This is a truly captivating story that doesn’t shy away from intense and violent scenes. While it delivers a powerful message, it ultimately leaves you with more questions than answers, especially after its shocking conclusion.

You know, Drew keeps describing the film as a breakup story, and there are definitely layers to unpack. But for me, it really feels like it’s about someone discovering who they are through that breakup. It’s almost an ‘anti-love story’ in a way! Though it starts like a typical romance, it throws so many genres together, and that’s what makes it so interesting to watch. It keeps you guessing!

Although the ending of Companion leaves things open for more, there aren’t any current plans for a sequel. If you’re interested, you can watch it now on HBO Max, where it’s quickly becoming very popular.
