Black Mirror: Netflix’s Dystopian Tech Nightmare

It’s a bit ironic that Netflix, a major corporation often criticized for contributing to a negative future, actually offers a great selection of dystopian stories. While Netflix’s business practices are seen by some as pushing the world towards a bleak, futuristic reality similar to the movie Blade Runner, they also provide us with compelling fictional dystopias that are just as captivating.

Arcane tells the story of an uprising by the common people from the lower world against their powerful rulers. Altered Carbon is a prime example of cyberpunk, using a fast-paced, gritty detective story to examine a future where the very rich can live forever by transferring their consciousness into new bodies. And Black Mirror has become so well-known for its depiction of frighteningly possible futures with technology that its name is now used to describe dangers posed by things like artificial intelligence and social media.

Certain movies and TV shows have become so well-known that their titles are now used as adjectives. For example, anything with a complex, layered plot is often called “Inception-like.” If someone is a powerful and influential leader, they might be described as “Godfather-esque.” And when technology takes a dark or frightening turn โ€“ think of things like AI or new gadgets โ€“ people often compare it to “Black Mirror.”

Black Mirror Is Synonymous With A Dystopian Tech Nightmare

Initially, Black Mirror was a relatively unknown British series โ€“ a contemporary reimagining of the classic horror anthology, The Twilight Zone. After two seasons, Netflix acquired it, and it quickly became a worldwide success. Now, like many shows on Netflix, it seems destined for endless continuation. This has resulted in more episodes than the show likely would have had if it remained on its original network, Channel 4, and with larger budgets and more famous actors. However, the quality has become inconsistent, and there’s no indication it will end anytime soon.

After fifteen years, Black Mirror remains a powerful show, now with seven seasons completed. Interestingly, what the show once presented as a scary, potential future has, in many ways, already come true, turning its dystopian vision into a reflection of our present.

Several predictions from the TV show Black Mirror have surprisingly come true. We’re seeing things happen in real life that were once considered science fiction. For example, AI is being used to virtually ‘resurrect’ people, similar to the storyline in the episode “Be Right Back.” Many people now earn a living through social media, just like the character in “Nosedive.” And, mirroring “The Waldo Moment,” a divisive public figure has gained significant, and damaging, political power. Perhaps the strangest parallel is the claim that former British Prime Minister David Cameron was once involved in a highly unusual incident at university.

When Is Black Mirror Season 8 Coming Out?

It’s been a year since the latest season of Black Mirror was released and many fans are wondering when season 8 will arrive. Netflix has confirmed that season 8 is in the works, but there’s no official release date yet. Black Mirror is known for its unpredictable release schedule โ€“ like many shows, it can be a while between seasons. For example, it took three years for new episodes of Wednesday to come out.

New seasons of Black Mirror don’t always follow a strict schedule โ€“ sometimes they’re released only a year apart, but once fans waited four years. Considering the last two seasons came out in 2023 and 2025, we can likely expect season 8 around 2027. Itโ€™s only been a year since the last episodes aired, and already real-world events have provided the show’s creator with plenty of inspiration for new stories.
