Angelina Jolie understood the “loneliness” of Maria Callas
This coming Friday, you’ll find Angelina Jolie gracing screens once more in the United Kingdom with the film Maria, a biographical drama based on the life of renowned opera singer Maria Callas.
Speaking with Digital Spy, Jolie pondered over her ability to connect with the singer, discussing the delicate balance she maintained between her personal and private spheres.
She suggested that everyone has both a public persona and a personal one, though it might be more pronounced in someone who is a performer. She found herself most connected to their work, and believed that they truly cherished and were deeply committed to it. This was her explanation.
She approached her duty towards the audience with great earnestness. This connection, crucial to her, mirrors my own experiences. Occasionally, it seems as if the public perceives a familiarity with us, and in many aspects, they certainly do.
It’s truly magical when you make an emotional connection with a stranger, but there’s often a sense of unease because you remain unknown to them, and there’s a part of yourself that may not always fit comfortably in this new relationship or isn’t fully accepted. Sometimes, the private aspects of your personality aren’t accommodated or simply don’t have a place to flourish in the same way.
As a gamer, I find myself puzzled. There’s an unspoken depth in her character that I can’t quite put my finger on, but the feeling of her solitude resonates deeply within me.
The story, titled Maria, revolves around the last days of Maria Callas before she passed away in 1977. Throughout this narrative, the character reflects on her life and career. At times, it employs a creative, surreal approach to depicting events, blurring the lines between what Maria perceives as real and not.
Director Pablo Larraín observed that the film revolves around the protagonist’s perspective, as it consistently focuses on one character and lets us view the world from her point of view.
The perspective presented is singular, largely dependent on the performer and her portrayal of the character. She decides when to invite us into her world and when to keep it private. This dynamic exchange is intriguing, delicate, and aesthetically pleasing.
