MasterChef’s new judge Grace Dent’s heartache of losing her parents within two years after being a carer for her beloved dad during his battle with Alzheimer’s
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself deeply moved by Grace Dent’s journey, a woman who has faced the unimaginable loss of both her parents within such a short span of time. Yet, she stands resilient, not just surviving, but thriving.
Grace Dent suffered the devastating loss of both her parents within the space of two years.
It’s been officially announced that the 51-year-old food critic is set to take over as the host of MasterChef, with Gregg Wallace temporarily stepping down from his role while an investigation into reports of inappropriate behavior is underway at the BBC.
Prior to her appearance on I’m A Celebrity the previous year, Grace openly discussed having experienced a particularly challenging period in her life.
Grace’s mother passed away in February 2021 after a battle with cancer.
She had been with her family until her passing, and looking back on her life, she expressed that there was nothing she would change about that experience.
As a lifestyle guide, I must confess that the absence of my mother has profoundly reshaped me. It’s as if a towering pillar that once stood firm in my life has crumbled, leaving an immeasurable void behind.
This phase of my life feels quite unusual. I find myself constantly yearning to reach out to her, as if every day brings a new thought about her. Since she’s no longer around, I’m grappling with figuring out who I am without her in my life.
After the passing of Grace’s mother, she took on the role of caring for her father, George, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
In The Guardian in the year 2020, she penned about his struggle: “I have so many things I wish to communicate to my father, yet I find it hard to express…
‘Dealing with Dementia isn’t just about the pain and fear it brings; it’s also incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. I dislike being on my own with Dad as it can be embarrassing at times. Yet, there are moments when I notice sheer terror in his gaze…’
Occasionally, during conversations now, Dad seems to lag in his thoughts, only to suddenly grasp the absurdity of what he’s saying. At that moment, a wave of embarrassment crosses his face.
Grace’s father died in December 2022, only 22 months after her mother passing.
At one point, the food critic honored him on her Instagram, saying: “Well Dad, you know just when to strike. It’s true that you weren’t fond of Christmas. With so many people dropping by when you wanted to relax with the Porridge Christmas Special, a glass of Lidl wine, and your fruit and nut.
“I appreciate you fixing my roller skates and imparting the importance of patience. In some way or another, I’ll forever feel connected to you during the year 1978, as I watch Kenny Everett. #ynwa
Before her adventure in the jungle the previous year, Grace discussed the sorrow she felt after losing both her parents within a brief period.
Given its size, this is quite a significant endeavor. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of seizing life’s opportunities, which is part of the reason I agreed.
After experiencing an overwhelming drain of energy while camping, I ultimately decided to step down from the show, realizing that my resilience was at its limit before embarking on another challenging BushTucker Trial.
After three decades in journalism, writing books, hosting podcasts, and appearing on television, the food critic has now secured her position as co-host of MasterChef alongside John Torode. To top it all off, she gained notoriety last year by participating on I’m A Celeb.
Grace was born and raised by her parents in Carlisle and grew up with her younger brother David.
As a literature-loving enthusiast, I couldn’t resist the allure of delving deeper into my passion. So, I enrolled at Stirling University, where I persistently worked towards my ultimate goal: earning a degree in English Literature.
During her college years, Grace embarked on her journalistic journey, penning articles for Cosmopolitan magazine, as reported by The Sun.
Following her completion of formal education, she embarked on a successful writing journey. Initially, she worked as an editorial assistant at Vogue. Later, she became a freelance writer contributing articles to several magazines including Marie Claire, Glamour, and others.
Apart from that, she had been engaged in writing about various television topics for a span of 12 years, starting from the year 2000 and continuing until 2012. Afterward, she transitioned to The Independent.
For six years she wrote a restaurant column dubbed ‘Grace and Flavour’, for The Evening Standard.
As a devoted enthusiast, I frequently find myself analyzing culinary creations on numerous television programs, perhaps you’ve spotted me judging dishes on MasterChef: The Professionals, Celebrity MasterChef, or MasterChef UK.
She was also a judge on a BBC program called the Great British Menu.
