As Disney removes another Star Wars movie from its schedule, insiders explain why the process seems so messy
As a film enthusiast who has been following the Star Wars saga since its inception, I must say this latest development leaves me both amused and perplexed. Over the years, I’ve witnessed triumphs, disappointments, and everything in between, but the ongoing struggle to keep the franchise afloat is nothing short of a galactic soap opera.
On yet another day, another snag emerges in the production plan for a new “Star Wars” film. According to TheWrap, Disney has taken out a future “Star Wars” movie that was initially scheduled for release on December 18, 2026 from its list of upcoming films, and replaced it with “Ice Age 6.” This film was likely the much-anticipated project focusing on Rey (Daisy Ridley), a character introduced in the “Star Wars” sequel trilogy. The production of this movie has been fraught with complications off-screen, with the most recent issue being the departure of writer Steven Knight.
Is there a chance that the Rey movie will be made, or will it end up among the abandoned or shelved Star Wars projects, such as those proposed by filmmakers like Taika Waititi, Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson, and David Benioff and Dan Weiss from Game of Thrones? What seems to be the challenge for Lucasfilm in making a decision about their next venture in the Star Wars universe? Why does it appear to be so difficult for them to choose their next step?
The Hollywood Reporter conducted a survey among some industry experts regarding this topic, and it appears that there could be internal discussions within the company about whether they should produce films centered around fresh characters or relying on nostalgia. As one insider put it, “Whether to create standalone movies or continue the Skywalker Saga in any form is a significant decision the company must make as they strive to progress.
As a devoted Star Wars fan, I can’t help but notice that many cherished characters from the original trilogy – like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo – have sadly met their end within the main storyline. This poses a challenge for producers who wish to tap into the nostalgia of past glories. As one expert put it, “Star Wars is built on nostalgia, and they’re running out of ways to evoke that feeling.
It appears that one possible approach could be concentrating on the character Rey, who has connections to the earlier films; she may be less familiar to you, but she’s the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine and uses the name “Rey Skywalker.” Given this, if the “Star Wars saga” is set to progress, it might do so through her. A source stated, “She is currently our most significant cinematic asset, perhaps even the only one, that Star Wars has at its disposal.
It seems there is speculation about a current struggle for control over the character Rey in the Star Wars universe. Not long ago, it became known that Disney had recruited writer Simon Kinberg to create a new trilogy of Star Wars films, which might include Rey. However, this could potentially conflict with the solo movie about Rey that was recently removed from Disney’s release schedule. Yet, according to some sources, this is just how Disney operates, with numerous projects progressing simultaneously, as one source put it, “It’s a different way of development.
To be honest, everything about the current state of Star Wars seems quite chaotic to me, considering that the television division has managed to consistently generate new content. Admittedly, not every new Star Wars show has been a success: The Mandalorian has been well-received, Andor is loved by fans, but The Acolyte didn’t perform as expected and won’t be getting another season. However, there is at least some progress being made. The TV series have even sparked excitement for the first Star Wars film in a while that I think will actually make it to theaters: The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026. As far as the overall cinematic universe of Star Wars goes, I’ll remain skeptical until I see actual proof.
