The horror film Shelby Oaks, which was released in theaters last year, is now available to stream. It’s already become very popular with viewers on the streaming platform.
Currently, Shelby Oaks is the sixth most popular movie on Hulu, quickly gaining traction after only a day of streaming. Released on October 24, 2025, the film earned about $8.1 million in theaters. Despite being made on a small $1 million budget, Shelby Oaks received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 55% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, many viewers enjoyed it as a found footage horror film.
Shelby Oaks Is an “Imaginative” Movie
A review of Shelby Oaks described it as a beautiful, though imperfect, and strikingly original film. Despite not having the slickness of a major studio production, the film benefits from a freedom of storytelling, avoiding the clichés and predictable plots common in today’s remakes and reboots. It’s a genuinely imaginative and unrestrained piece of work.
The film Shelby Oaks follows a ghost hunting team, the Paranormal Paranoids, who disappeared while investigating the abandoned town of Shelby Oaks. While most were found dead, Riley (Sarah Durn) remained missing. Years later, Riley’s sister, Mia (Camille Sullivan, known from The Butterfly Effect), uncovers unsettling video footage hinting that Riley might still be alive. Driven by this discovery, Mia journeys to Shelby Oaks to find answers, and soon experiences increasingly bizarre and frightening paranormal events.
Mike Flanagan Executive Produced Shelby Oaks
Chris Stuckmann directed the film. The cast also includes Brendan Sexton III (known for Session 9), Robin Bartlett (The Fabelmans), Michael Beach (If Beale Could Talk), Keith David (They Live), and Derek Mears (Friday the 13th). The creators of The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep were executive producers.
Mike Flanagan explained to Variety that he was drawn to support the Kickstarter campaign for Shelby because it reminded him of his own early experiences. He funded his first film, Absentia, through Kickstarter in 2010, and watching this new campaign brought back those memories. He was impressed by the creator’s drive and self-reliant spirit, which mirrored his own feelings when he was starting out. Seeing the creator actively promote the project and rally support from loved ones was inspiring, reminding Flanagan of the challenges of building a career in a tough industry and the importance of creating your own opportunities.
