Elizabeth Banks, who starred in the Hunger Games films, says one line from the movies is particularly memorable and frequently quoted by fans.
Elizabeth Banks played Effie Trinket in all four Hunger Games films, released between 2012 and 2015. Effie is the escort for Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) after they’re chosen to compete in the Games. Initially portrayed as superficial and believing in the prestige of the Games, Effie ultimately joins the rebellion and becomes a supporter of Katniss.
Despite the character’s over-the-top style and silly dialogue, audiences still enjoy Effie’s most extravagant looks and lines. In an interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant for The Miniature Wife, Helena Bonham Carter and her co-star Matthew Macfadyen were asked if there was ever a project or line they delivered that initially seemed insignificant but later became surprisingly popular with fans.
Elizabeth Banks shared a funny story about a line from The Hunger Games. She casually said, ‘That is mahogany’ during filming, not expecting it to make the final cut. Now, people often shout the line at her in public! The moment happens in the first movie when Katniss gets frustrated with her mentor, Haymitch, and angrily stabs the table, prompting Effie Trinket to say the line.
Fans can look forward to seeing Effie and Haymitch return in the upcoming movie, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The film is based on Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, released in 2025, which tells the story of the 50th Hunger Games and how a young Haymitch, at age 16, won the competition. As is tradition, Hunger Games victors later serve as mentors, and this movie explores Haymitch’s journey before he took on that role. Development of the film began quickly after the book’s release.
In the book Sunrise on the Reaping, we learn how Haymitch and Effie first met. Effie stepped in to help the District 12 tributes get ready for their interviews when their stylist didn’t arrive – her sister was part of the District 12 prep team. The upcoming movie will feature Oscar nominee Elle Fanning as Effie and Joseph Zada as Haymitch.
Francis Lawrence, who previously directed the Hunger Games films, is back for this new movie. The cast now includes Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Lili Taylor, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, and Kieran Culkin, all playing younger versions of familiar characters. Sunrise on the Reaping will be in theaters on November 20, 2026.
Elizabeth Banks has become a well-known actress thanks to her roles in popular projects like Pitch Perfect, The LEGO Movie, Mrs. America, Modern Family, Love & Mercy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and What to Expect When You’re Expecting. However, she’s arguably most famous for her work in The Hunger Games, a hugely successful franchise that includes her most memorable line.
