Alicia Silverstone’s 2022 shark thriller didn’t make much of an impact with critics when it was first released. However, the film is now gaining attention thanks to the recent debut of the new shark movie, Thrash, on streaming platforms.
Right now, The Requin is the fourth most popular movie on Netflix in the US (according to FlixPatrol). It’s only two spots behind another shark movie, and many people likely started watching it after enjoying Thrash. The true crime drama Husband, Father, Killer: The Alyssa Pladl Story is at No. 3, and the new comedy Roommates is currently No. 1.
Alicia Silverstone Leads the Cast of The Requin
Le-Van Kiet, known for his work on Batman & Robin and Clueless, wrote and directed The Requin. The film stars Jaelyn, played by , who struggles to survive with her husband, Kyle (James Tupper from Men in Trees), after a huge tropical storm leaves them stranded at sea. Deirdre O’Connell (The Penguin) and Jennifer Mudge (Hack) also appear in the movie.
The film was a box office disappointment, earning only about $130,000 despite costing $8.5 million to make. Critics didn’t like it either, giving it a low 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences rated it even lower at 6%. It certainly didn’t become the next Jaws, but it’s recently found some success on streaming services, offering a bit of a comeback after its poor performance when it was released in 2022.
Thrash Was More Well Received Than The Requin
While Thrash did better than some other recent shark movies, it wasn’t a hit with critics, earning a 43% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 24% audience score. Like other modern shark thrillers, it received mixed reviews, but remains popular with viewers—both Thrash and The Requin are performing well on Netflix. Despite the rarity of shark attacks in real life, audiences continue to be captivated by these films.
Silverstone has explained that while these kinds of stories don’t hurt many people, the harm they do cause is similar to what happens when wild animals like bears or coyotes enter populated areas. They’re driven to do so because humans have taken their natural habitat and resources, creating a scarcity that forces them to seek food elsewhere. This reflects a theme of humanity damaging the environment, leading to a natural ‘fight back’ where we end up battling against the forces of nature.
The Requin is streaming on Netflix.
