As a long-time fan of the Yellowstone series, I must say that this week’s episode was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The death of John Dutton, portrayed brilliantly by Kevin Costner, left me reeling. It felt like losing an old friend, someone who had been there through thick and thin with his family.

In the recent episode of Yellowstone, it was revealed that John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, met an unfortunate end. The authorities declared his death a suicide, but Beth (Kelly Reilly) had her suspicions. It was later unveiled in the opening scene of part two that Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) had hired a skilled assassin (Grant Horton) to eliminate John Dutton, who was considered as the future governor, and his predicament.

Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) didn’t feel the same way as his sister initially, but deep down, he viewed Jamie (Wes Bentley) as a brother whom he continued to hold affection for. It would take someone truly vile and corrupt to commit such a horrendous act of this scale. At that point, Kayce wasn’t ready to implicate his brother in such a heinous crime. However, as new details surface about the Dutton inheritance, everything has shifted, and he is no longer hesitant to suspect his brother.

We aren’t in Montana anymore

In Texas, the team wakes up well before dawn, readying their horses for the day. Rip scans the area with a serious expression, trying to locate Teeter. She’s lying there, trapped under a rattlesnake, too scared to move. It seems she left her tent flap open, inviting the snake in, and not just one – her tent is swarming with them. Fortunately, Rip handled the crisis swiftly. She managed to escape this time. Texas isn’t like Montana; it’s no place for jesting. The only one who seemed excited about the situation was Gator, looking forward to cooking them up for meals. However, Rip was enraged that they stumbled upon a rattlesnake-infested area.

In her high-end vehicle, Beth speeds along the highway while applying makeup, setting off a sequence of events that leads to an encounter with law enforcement. Early in the day, she is stopped by a police officer, ready to charm her way out of trouble. However, unexpectedly, the officer turns out to be a woman. Heading towards Rip, prior to his death, Beth is instructed to maintain speeds below 80 mph. Ultimately, she’s told to express gratitude for her husband’s work, as this area is primarily agricultural and ranchers hold great esteem.

As a fervent admirer, I find myself traversing the path of Rattlesnake Row, a place where my partner’s scent isn’t exactly my favorite. I’ve secured a suite in Amarillo and casually hint to the bunkhouse boys that their boss is mine for a brief spell. In exchange, I promise to bring along all their significant others, including a certain lady of the evening for Jake. Rip harbors some reservations about abandoning his comrades, but Ryan confidently asserts that they don’t have many other options, and they’re hardly kids. They’ll manage, he assures me.

We’ve come a long long way together

At Kayce and Monica’s residence, they are working on renovations for their newly acquired house. Meanwhile, Tate remains displeased by their public displays of affection. The content couple takes pride in owning a home and gazes at the beauty of what they have achieved after enduring what seemed like endless heartache.

At long last, Rip and Beth are relishing their time together. This is their initial venture beyond Montana’s borders, making it a first for Rip who, unfortunately, has never ventured outside the state before, something that saddens Beth. As she contemplates their potential adventures if not tethered to the ranch, Beth wonders about all the experiences they could share.

On Rip’s part, he takes great joy in being tied to the ranch; it’s his source of income and his cherished dream. Despite yearning for more, Beth adores Rip deeply, which allows her to tolerate the situation. Later, they enjoy a delightful evening at the local bar. It appears that Beth appreciates Texas far more than she does Montana. The area isn’t overrun with tourists. Instead, it’s renowned as the world’s cattle capital. She’s uncertain about their future, but this life wouldn’t be an unfortunate one for her.

Home sweet home again

In Montana, Lloyd is attempting to tame a wild mustang. He’s skeptical about the news article he’s reading. Rip understands they need more details. Who instigated this conflict and how can it be resolved? Both Rip and Lloyd have spent their entire lives in this region, neither of them can fathom a world without Yellowstone National Park.

Carter seems deeply affected by John’s passing, while Beth prepares for her day. Summer reappears, a fact that leaves me questioning her necessity this season given the extensive storylines in just six episodes. I can’t help but ponder the purpose of her character altogether, yet she’s back. Here comes John Dutton’s former mistress again.

According to Beth, Summer has been confined at home, but she’s now showing evidence that she’s been released and is free to leave. Beth seems to have forgotten about her altogether and tells her to vacate the house. Clearly, Beth is eager for her to depart, and who wouldn’t be in such circumstances?

In this scenario, Rip enters to find Carter, who’s more like a son to him, in a state of solitude. He yearns for peace and privacy. Throughout his life, those he relies on have abandoned him. The act of suicide has left him shattered. Rip offers him the assurance that their home is always available to him. He encourages Carter, saying it’s time to toughen up. There’s always work to be done, yet Carter aspired to emulate Rip. Rip acknowledges that many have tried and if Carter manages to achieve this, he will be the first to do so successfully.

After his return home, the honeymoon feeling seems to have vanished. Monica expresses her sympathy over his loss. For a while, Kayce intends to remain at the lodge, handling the aftermath. Touched by her offer to accompany him, he considers it. Kayce discusses with Tate about the legacy of John Dutton, questioning if it’s a responsibility Tate is willing to shoulder. Although Kayce has always aspired to work there, Tate seems hesitant about taking charge – that very role may have led to John’s demise.

Presently, Tate Dutton stands as the one expected to carry forward the Dutton family tradition, but he’s grappling with the sorrow of losing his grandfather. He yearns to understand the circumstances surrounding this loss. Much remains unclear to him, and it extends to what Kayce understands too. Similarly, there are things Tate isn’t sure about disclosing to his son. Kayce imparts to Tate that it’s up to him on how he recollects his grandfather – the man he was, or the way he passed away. They exchange a poignant, bittersweet hug, and both decide to focus on their memories of how he lived rather than how he died.

How did John Dutton die?

Beth and Kayce stumbled upon the governor’s residence, encircled by law enforcement officers and other figures of authority. Since Beth shared an almost philosophical bond with her father, she instinctively sensed that something was amiss. The ominous premonition of his demise washed over her, as it became clear that her father was no longer among the living. A short while later, John’s lifeless body was found in the bathroom within the house. Nearby lay a firearm, suggesting a possible suicide, but sometimes looks can be misleading.

Straightaway, Beth had no doubt that her father wasn’t the one to blame for his passing. Instead, she swiftly looked at Kayce, expressing without hesitation that she believed Jamie was culpable. He would face the consequences.

I must confess, the manner in which John Dutton’s character met his end feels unpleasant to me. It’s such a tragic way for one of the most compelling TV characters we’ve seen in recent years to depart. I believe John and Kevin Costner, who brought him to life so brilliantly, deserve a more fitting conclusion. Taylor Sheridan’s writing, which has been exceptional up until now, seems to have fallen short in this instance. The signs point towards an investigation leading to a murder, but I can’t help but feel let down by this development.

Next time is the last time

In Jamie’s realm, sympathies are abundant following his tragic fate. Beth patiently waits with anticipation. She takes a seat at his desk, puffing on a cigarette, preparing to spring, much like a swift cheetah. She can see straight through him and is poised to strike.

Instead, she slaps him hard enough for him to focus on her. She queries him about why he can’t meet her gaze, but they both understand the reason. She grants him one more opportunity to disclose it. However, his cowardice prevents him from doing so. The moment he sets eyes on her will be the final instant of his living existence. She vows that her face will be the last sight he ever beholds. And she will be grinning.

For the first time, Beth encounters Sarah Atwood. In an awkward moment, they collide shoulders and Beth accidentally nudges Sarah’s face. A vase happens to be nearby and shatters as a result. Although nothing is broken except the vase, Beth realizes her social reputation might now be tarnished due to this incident. She acknowledges her role in it.

Beth conveys to Kayce that Jamie doesn’t even dispute the allegations. Kayce’s trust in Jamie is completely gone. In response, Kayce seeks assistance from a military colleague to uncover the truth. Monica fears she might lose her husband amidst this conflict. She confides in Tate that they must prevent him from being taken away from them. Simultaneously, Kayce demands a roster of potential assassins he can begin tracking immediately. Despite warnings about their danger, he is determined to bring justice.

Ellis Steele expresses sincere regret over Jamie’s tragedy, but also believes it could prove beneficial in the future. Jamie doubts the Dutton family can challenge construction projects for longer than a year, however, Beth is determined to use every resource available. A special election will be held for a new governor, and Jamie intends to participate. Jamie understands that Beth is aware of his success, and she believes he has emerged victorious. However, a day of reckoning is approaching for all involved.
