Breaking Down the Complex Family Tree in the Dune Universe
As a scholar of Frank Herbert’s epic saga, Dune, I find myself captivated by the intricate web of familial connections that span across millennia, planets, and power struggles. The Corrino and Harkonnen dynasties, while seemingly disparate in time, are intertwined like the roots of the giant sandworms of Arrakis.
You might recall some of the key characters in the HBO’s series titled Dune: Prophecy, which serves as a prequel to Frank Herbert’s Dune books and the movies directed by Denis Villeneuve. The narrative revolves around Paul Atreides, who can be seen as a prophet figure, struggling with his destiny to disrupt the current galactic system. Throughout the first novel of Dune, Paul is mainly engaged in seeking revenge for his father’s death at the hands of the villainous Baron Harkonnen and Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. Both these antagonists view Paul’s family as a potential threat to their authority.
The storyline of “Dune: Prophecy” takes place 10,000 years prior to the birth of Paul, yet it features familiar names and a similar political structure. The Corrino dynasty reigns over the Imperium, with the Harkonnens and Atreides still wielding significant power in the galaxy’s politics. The future Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV is a descendant of Javicco Corrino, while Keiran Atreides is connected to Paul. Valya Harkonnen, the protagonist in “Prophecy,” will eventually be associated with Paul’s adversary, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.
Here is how the characters in Dune: Prophecy relate to those in Dune.
The Corrino Family in Dune: Prophecy
As I embark on this cinematic journey, it’s Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong), who holds sway over the Imperium, that grabs my attention first. His royal partner, Empress Natalya Arat Corrino (Jodhi May), is by his side, and together they have two offspring: Constantine Corrino (Josh Heuston) and the elder, Ynez Corrino (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina). Intriguingly, Ynez is promised to a young man, whom she will wait for to mature, meanwhile preparing herself with the Sisterhood to hone her abilities as a Truthsayer.
The Harkonnen Family in Dune: Prophecy
In the narrative of Dune: Prophecy, it’s Valya Harkonnen, portrayed by Jessica Barden followed by Emily Watson, who serves as the main character. She oversees the Sisterhood, a group that will later transform into the Bene Gesserit, with her real-life sister, Reverend Mother Tula Harkonnen (initially played by Emma Canning and then Olivia Williams), providing assistance.
In the Dune series, Valya frequently mentions reclaiming the Harkonnen name. As per the prequels penned by Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, centuries before Valya was born, the inhabitants in the Dune universe were oppressed by Artificial Intelligence. Humans rose against these machines, and following nearly a century of conflict that claimed billions of lives, a man named Vorian Atreides aimed to lead an army to defeat the machines decisively at the Battle of Corrin.
In this scenario, Commander Vorian chose to put two million people’s lives at risk in a bid to end the ongoing war, but his subordinate, Bashar Abulurd Hakronnen, refused this approach. Instead, he disarmed the human prisoners to save them, which led to a fierce conflict with heavy casualties. Afterwards, Vorian accused Abulurd of treason and exiled him to an icy planet.
Valya, a descendant of Abulurd three generations removed, holds the conviction that Abulurd’s actions were heroic rather than cowardly. Determined to rehabilitate the reputation of the Harkonnen family, she pledges retribution against House Atreides.
The Atreides Family in Dune: Prophecy
In the story of Dune: Prophecy, we encounter only one member of the Atreides family, namely Keiran Atreides (portrayed by Chris Mason). His role is not just a family member but also the sword master for the emperor and his kin. At present, it appears that Keiran spends as much time engaging in romantic pursuits with Princess Ynez as he does contemplating his family’s heritage.
The Corrino Family in Dune
Over the span of approximately ten thousand years, events depicted in “Dune: Prophecy” and “Dune” transpired. Remarkably, the Corrino dynasty remains in power. In “Dune”, Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV, portrayed by Christopher Walken in Denis Villeneuve’s films, governs the Imperium. Princess Irulan Corrino (Florence Pugh), a Bene Gesserit with writings featured in the “Dune” books, stands by his side.
Shaddam IV, the emperor, is threatened by Duke Leto Atreides’ growing influence and secretly aids Baron Harkonnen in assassinating Leto by providing them with the Imperial Army’s best troops, the Sardaukar. Later on, Paul Atreides, Leto’s son, takes revenge by gathering support from the native tribes of Arrakis and eliminates all the Harkonnens. Ultimately, he solidifies his position as ruler of the empire by marrying Princess Irulan.
The Harkonnen Family in Dune
In this time period, the Harkonnen clan is governed by Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. This baron believes he has no offspring and designates Feyd-Rautha, the son of his half-brother, as the inheritor of their family lineage. Concurrently, he positions Glossu Rabban, also known as Beast, his half-brother’s other son, for combat duties.
Without Baron Harkonnen realizing it, he fathered a child. This child eventually grew into Lady Jessica, who later became the concubine of Duke Leto Atreides and gave birth to Paul and Alia. As a result, in a technical sense, Baron Harkonnen is Paul’s grandfather.
The Bene Gesserit kept Jessica’s lineage secret from her and initially trained her upon learning she was pregnant, with instructions to deliver a girl. However, the cult had devised a scheme to marry the female heir of Atreides to Feyd-Rautha, producing the prophesied Kwisatz Haderach or Chosen One. Yet, Jessica employed her abilities to ensure her first child was born a boy instead.
The Atreides Family in Dune
In the novel ‘Dune’, Duke Leto Atreides serves as the head of his family, the Atreides clan. Alongside Lady Jessica, he had two children, Paul and Alia. However, it was after Leto’s demise that Alia was born. Many regard Paul as the prophesied Kwisatz Haderach, a figure with extraordinary abilities, but he frequently questions his role as this supposed chosen one. As the story progresses, the line between hero and villain in his character becomes blurred. Remarkably, even before she was born, Alia displayed signs of wielding unique powers.
