Outer Banks season 4 episode 6 recap: ‘The Town Council’
As a seasoned television enthusiast with a knack for deciphering the intricacies of storylines, I must say that this week’s episode of Outer Banks was nothing short of exhilarating! The drama, suspense, and action were on par with a rollercoaster ride, and it left me on the edge of my seat.
The second half of season 4 of “Outer Banks” continues right away following episode 5, titled “Albatross,” where Luke Maybank (Gary Weeks) tells JJ that he is actually the son of Larissa Genrette (Tommi Rose) and Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane).
JJ still doesn’t believe that he’s the son of Larissa and Groff.
In the sixth episode of Outer Banks season 4, titled “The Town Council,” an early scene offers a glimpse into baby JJ’s past. As Luke comforts fretful JJ, Larissa grapples with her marital troubles. A bond forms between Luke and Larissa, but Groff hints that she’s unwell. In an attempt to give Larissa and her husband some respite, Groff delivers JJ to Luke’s home.
It seems unusual that Groff asked Luke to secretly take JJ from Larissa, which appears more like abduction than anything else. The rumor is that Larissa and her son drowned, but since we know that JJ is with Luke, it’s clear the report is false. Groff persuades Luke to hide the fact that JJ is still alive from the Genrettes by offering him money. This whole situation feels very wrong!
Previously, character JJ Maybank (played by Rudy Pankow) doesn’t trust Luke. He doubts Luke’s claims of being a Genrette or a Groff. Luke attempts to share another piece of information with JJ, but JJ departs before the news can be shared.
In retrospect, JJ recalls the peculiar behavior of Groff towards him during their encounter at Goat Island. It’s evident that Groff recognizes JJ as his offspring. The intrigue lies in what actions Groff might take now that he knows this fact.
Cleo and John B rescue Sarah and Pope
In Charleston, characters Pope Heyward (Jonathan Daviss) and Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) find themselves stuck inside a crypt that’s filling with rainwater. Acting swiftly, Cleo (Carlacia Grant) and John B Routledge (Chase Stokes) manage to crack open the tomb and rescue Pope and Sarah just in time before things become dire.
On the way home from the ferry, I found myself debating whether to abandon this treasure hunt business, fearing I might end up just like my old man. But then Sarah, my trusted partner in crime, managed to convince me that I’m still hooked on this adventure. And for the very first time, she shared a secret – what Captain Dalia and Lightner had snatched: it appeared to be a map, as far as she could tell. It’s likely they’ve found the key to the Blue Crown!
JJ makes Kie promise not to tell the Pogues about him possibly being a Genrette
Eventually, JJ returns home to encounter Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey). She appears anxious for his wellbeing, yet JJ isn’t in a good state at the moment. He confides in her about Luke’s words, and it’s evident he doubts what Luke said, with Kiara sharing similar skepticism. However, the idea that Luke suggested has been sown.
At that moment, the Twinkie arrives. John B, Sarah, Cleo, and Pope had come back without anything from Charleston. JJ requests Kie to swear that he won’t disclose the possibility that he could be a Genrette to others.
It appears as though JJ is doubting whether his father is being truthful, although we’re not entirely clear on the reasons behind this doubt.
Later, JJ lies about it to John B and the Pogues after they share what happened.
John informs everyone that the zoning decision for our residence/workplace is being postponed until later in the day. They are devising a strategy to mobilize the island community to protect Poguelandia. Kiara updates Sarah, saying Rafe Cameron (Drew Starkey) dropped by with an offer of assistance. Sarah agrees to meet with him.
Lightner and the Captain are working for someone
After returning to the sea, Lightner and Captain Dalia discuss recent events. Lightner expresses doubts about whether the Blue Crown truly exists, but Captain Dalia assures him she believes it does. Regardless, she intends to complete their mission and hand over the Blue Crown.
It becomes clear that someone else, either Lightner or the Captain, has an employer or associate. It’s uncertain who they’re connected to, but I sense there’s a possibility it could be someone we are already familiar with.
Groff lies about Goat Island
As a fan, I’ve been hearing chatter about Goat Island. There’s a buzz that the land might have been passed to the state, but Groff clarified this isn’t accurate to Hollis. Still, there seems to be a lot of smoke surrounding this business deal, and I can’t help but feel it’s all quite fishy, very mysterious indeed.
In the morning, Hollis arranges a meeting with Sofia to discuss a business matter. While keeping an eye on Rafe, Sofia senses that some developments are underway.
I don’t like this whole Groff-Hollis business.
Sarah finally meets with Rafe
At Cameron’s residence, Sarah drops by to see Rafe. Following Ward’s demise, Sarah hasn’t received her inheritance, and neither has Rafe. He hopes that Sarah will collaborate with him to bring Wheezie (Julia Antonelli) into the picture in order to persuade Rose (Caroline Arapoglou) to relinquish their shared funds.
Sarah doesn’t want to do it, and she leaves in a rush.
There’s something there, though. Rafe and Sarah are about to be cooking up something soon. They need that money.
Pope gets arrested after JJ’s rampage
After spending the entire day working to secure The Cut’s backing for the re-zoning hearing, it seems that the council has made their decision in advance! The property has already been rezoned, creating an issue for the Pogues. During the meeting, John B delivers a passionate speech that stirs up the townsfolk.
John B mentions that after losing their fathers, they are just trying to rebuild a home.
Unfortunately, during John B’s speech, Dale Zeasy, the realtor from the auction, interrupts. It was revealed earlier that Luke, the property’s original owner, had nullified the sale of the property prior to the auction, invalidating the transaction. The Pogues are said to be getting their money back, but the meeting quickly escalates into chaos. Sheriff Shoupe (Callum Moss) and his men attempt to apprehend Kie and the Pogues, but JJ takes matters into his own hands.
JJ hurls a chair outside through the window, assaults multiple law enforcement officials, and is apprehended. He manages to escape from the patrol car and takes off. What an extraordinary scene!
After the remaining members of the Pogues depart, it’s JJ who takes off, wielding a bat as he flees. In his rampage, he destroys several local businesses. This is an extraordinary instance of retribution against the Kooks and their mischief.
The rest of the townspeople start looting and rioting, though, and things get serious quickly.
JJ forcefully enters the real estate office that belongs to Dale Zeasy, who intends to exploit the land owned by JJ and the Pogues for personal profit.
In the heart of the real estate office, I found myself pinned down by Shoupe and his cronies. They were hell-bent on halting my progress, but I stood firm, refusing to yield, despite Kie and the Pogues’ attempts to sway me. In a desperate bid to send them packing, I resorted to an unconventional tactic: shoving a heap of silverware into the microwave and igniting it – sparking a blaze that, hopefully, would clear the way.
In this scenario, Pope intervenes by tackling an officer, thereby creating space for JJ to flee. This action recalls a similar act from season 1, where JJ accepted the blame for Pope when their boat was sunk (Topper’s boat). Loyalty is one of the defining traits of the Pogues.
JJ escapes, thanks to Pope, who gets arrested.
Rafe meets with Chandler Groff
At Goat Island, Rafe convenes with Chandler Groff regarding the potential investment in Goat Island. However, the transaction hasn’t been processed as of yet, a point Rafe points out to remind Groff. This alteration seems to affect the atmosphere of their discussion. Trying to persuade Rafe, Groff speaks about his reasons for wanting to spite those who have looked down on him in relation to Goat Island.
Groff urges Rafe to finalize the agreement today, and Rafe complies. He added his signature to additional documents to “strengthen” his pledge, a move that struck me as questionable. I mean, what other things might he be agreeing to?
Once Rafe has put his signature, Groff instructs him to hold onto the pen. Inscribed on the pen is “Riad Mimouna Essouira, Morocco.” Indeed, that’s quite intriguing.
Rafe tells him Groff that he’ll come after him if he’s screwing with him.
Later, I find myself pinned down on the bridge as they scour for me. Once more, I manage to slip through their grasp, only to wind up back at Poguelandia. I hop on a boat and run into Rafe out in the open sea. It’s kind of like a character from The Umbrella Academy getting lost in the world of Outer Banks.
JJ goes to the place where this all started for him: Goat Island.
Therefore, that concludes episode 6 of ‘Outer Banks’ season 4. What an exhilarating episode it was! I’m left wondering how our Pogue friends might extricate themselves from this predicament.
