Rumer Willis says sister Tallulah’s autism diagnosis ‘gave her permission to be exactly who she is’

As an ardent admirer of the Willis family, I find myself deeply moved by Rumer Willis’ heartfelt tribute to her younger sister Tallulah during the Autism Speaks Los Angeles Gala. The way she described Tallulah’s journey, from a unique and sensitive child to an extraordinary woman using her experiences to help others, is nothing short of inspiring.

Rumer Willis opened up about her younger sister Tallulah Willis’ autism diagnosis recently.

At the Autism Speaks Los Angeles Gala on a Thursday night, she presented her compassionate and exceptional sibling, who received an honor at the event, and shared details about her diagnosis.

In her speech, the actress from Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood expressed that it felt like coming home when Tallulah, who is currently 30 years old, was diagnosed with autism as an adult during the summer of 2023 at the age of 29.

She expressed that receiving the diagnosis allowed her to fully embrace her true self, and was filled with joy as she spoke about Tallulah’s journey of self-discovery. This experience reminded her of witnessing someone release a long-held breath after years of tension, according to People.

36-year-old actress, having recently announced her separation from Derek Richard Thomas two months prior, mentioned that her sibling was always particularly noticeable.

Initially, it was clear that she was unique – not only because of her immense creativity, which was untamed and seemingly endless, but also due to the fact that she appeared to vibrate at a slightly distinct rhythm compared to everyone else, she explained.

Instead of confining herself within the boundaries of coloring, she was always dreaming up unique universes, as Rumer put it. To be fair, many of us struggled just to catch up with her creativity.

She said that her sister’s sparkle also presents as a ‘sensitivity.’

She described a form of engagement with the world that was not only stunningly beautiful but could also be intensely overpowering, she clarified.

She mentioned that for Tallulah, aspects often overlooked – such as textures, sounds, and busy environments – might seem like impossible obstacles.

She also said she watched her sister navigate the challenges for years prior to her diagnosis.

She had everything needed for peace, yet found herself struggling to create it since she didn’t have the guidance on how to do so, which she expressed.

When she eventually got her autism diagnosis, it felt more like returning home than an unexpected discovery, she elaborated.

‘It gave her permission to be exactly who she is, without apology or explanation,’ she said.

Rumer said watching Tallulah ‘grow into herself’ has been ‘breathtaking.’

Since that time, she has blossomed into her true self with an elegance and assurance that is astonishingly beautiful. It’s as if she has just released a long-held breath after many years.

She has discovered contentment within herself, not by transforming herself, but rather by wholeheartedly accepting every aspect of herself – her unique traits, vulnerabilities, and everything in between.

She celebrated Tallulah for turning her own experience ‘outward’ to help others.

She mentioned that Tallulah is channeling her energies towards creating a community where individuals, particularly women who are frequently disregarded, can discover acceptance and camaraderie.

She went on to say, “This is not merely a job for her; instead, it’s a profound urge that compels her to appear and offer assistance. Already, she’s leaving an impression that will echo long past this evening.

Rumer expressed gratitude to her sister for showing her that being unique is not something to conquer, but instead, it’s a quality to be cherished.

She said watching her younger sister grow up was ‘one of the greatest privileges’ of her life.

Here’s to you – your path, your spirit, and all the greatness yet to unfold. It gives me no greater pride to be by your side tonight, cheering you on as you continue to shine.
