House of the Dragon star asks that people stop sending hateful messages to his loved ones
As a seasoned gamer and long-time observer of online communities, I find myself dismayed yet again by the unfortunate reality that public profiles often attract unsavory characters. The tale of Tom Glynn-Carney’s plight on HBO’s House of the Dragon is just another chapter in this all-too-common story.
As a gamer, having an online presence can make you a potential target for internet bullies, harassers, and unsavory characters. It’s a tale all too familiar. For example, think about the numerous actors who have stepped back from social media due to toxic fans who chose to abuse and harass them instead of enjoying their work. This unfortunate occurrence happens far more often than it should.
Occasionally, it seems as if we can’t foresee such incidents. For instance, Tom Glynn-Carney, portraying King Aegon II Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, has recently taken to Instagram Stories to request that people cease harassing his friends and loved ones. Apparently, this is an issue he’s been dealing with.
It has been brought to my attention that there are messages being sent to my friends and loved ones that are of a hateful and harmful nature. Please stop. This behaviour is not acceptable. Accounts dedicated to this kind of trolling will be taken down. I think we can often forget the power of words. Spread only love. Tom
As a fan, I’ve noticed some speculation online suggesting that Glynn-Carney’s friends and family might be targeted due to his role as Aegon. While Glynn-Carney himself doesn’t explicitly state this, considering the fact that his portrayal of Aegon is what he’s most renowned for, it’s hard not to draw a connection.
As a gamer, I can’t fathom why someone would harass an actor over their performance in a TV show. It’s just plain crazy to me that they’d take it so far as to target the actor’s friends and family too! It’s beyond comprehension what could possibly be going through people’s minds when they act this way.
In the following section, it’s worth noting that such disrespectful actions are inappropriate regardless of the situation, as Glynn-Carney points out – but I must admit, it leaves me puzzled how anyone could view Tom Glynn-Carney on House of the Dragon and not exclaim, “He was phenomenal!” Indeed, Glynn-Carney’s portrayal of Aegon in the latest season of House of the Dragon was undeniably my highlight. His depiction of anger, arrogance, pain, fear, vulnerability…simply outstanding! If you find yourself impelled to reach out to him and your message isn’t expressing gratitude, I suggest giving it a second thought.
Instead of continuously sharing harmful messages with loved ones, which is certainly strange and unintelligent, let’s hope this behavior ceases. It’s possible that a single blog post could address the negativity issue online. Well done by me.
