Grotesquerie episode 8 recap: Lois learns her new reality

As a seasoned gamer of mystery and suspense narratives, I can confidently say that Grotesquerie has me hooked like no other show this year! The latest episode was a rollercoaster ride, flipping the script on us yet again with Lois being the one in a coma instead. I’ve seen my fair share of plot twists, but this one took the cake.

In the seventh installment of FX’s series “Grotesquerie,” the murder mystery took an unexpected turn when it was discovered that Sister Megan was involved in the string of murders. However, a stunning revelation followed – Lois, not her husband Marshall, had been in a coma all along. Yes, you heard it right! The plot twist was unveiled to show that Marshall and Merritt were preparing to terminate Lois’s life, but just in the nick of time, she miraculously took a breath. Now, having awakened from her coma in episode 8, Lois is about to learn the truth behind what’s really been happening in reality rather than just her dreams.

WARNING: Major spoilers for Grotesquerie episode 8 are below.

After understanding that everything Lois has experienced this season is false, we’re piecing together the truth of the situation. Episode 8 commences with Merritt, a medical professional, instructing a class. A colleague approaches Merritt to discuss Lois and the dreams she had during her coma. The scene then shifts to Lois who is undergoing physical therapy at the hospital. Charlie is her doctor, but Lois, understandably, lacks faith in him.

The reality

In the dream world, Nurse Redd, who isn’t really a nurse outside of Lois’ dreams, returns home to Marshall. He expresses his intention to divorce Lois since she’s awake now, but Redd disagrees with this plan, stating she would stick by him regardless if he doesn’t follow through with the divorce. Marshall recalls telling Lois he wished for her death while she was in a coma, a fact he realizes she must have heard.

In a subsequent scene, the same physician engages with Merritt before visiting Sister Megan – who turns out to be Detective Megan – and she discloses her tense bond with Lois. The doctor is attempting to decipher the significance of Lois’ dreams during her coma and how they align with her real life. Their discussion centers around the murder case Megan and Lois had worked on involving the girl Andrea, and we catch a peek into Megan’s domestic life. It becomes evident that she’s entangled in an unhealthy relationship with Justin, who frequently drinks and depends on her for meals. What kind of harmful dynamic is this relationship between them?

Eventually, Lois encounters the physician who inquires if she’s prepared to re-enter reality. Given the magnitude of thoughts she needs to sort through for this transition, Lois is understandably apprehensive, as her coma dreams seemed incredibly real. She confesses that she’s struggling with figuring out how to progress considering the memories from her subconscious. The doctor then initiates a dialogue, probing into the events of her dreams. However, Lois isn’t keen on undergoing therapy.

Putting together the pieces of reality

Although initially uncertain, Lois considers the doctor’s interpretation of her dream and its significance, generally finding his explanation convincing. It’s becoming clearer, but the unexpected turn in the storyline remains just as startling.

Lois leaves the hospital and is greeted by Megan outside who’s there to pick her up. During the car ride, Megan assures Lois that she’s not her enemy, referencing Lois’ depiction of her in her dreams. She seems offended by what Lois thought of her in her subconscious. They then talk about the Andrea case and begin arguing before Megan drops Lois home. As she closes the door, Lois tells Megan that she is “possessed.”

Upon arriving home, I find myself greeted by Maisie, who I’ve recently aided in some endeavors. In a subsequent sequence, Maisie takes the wheel of Merritt’s car, eager for a heart-to-heart conversation with my daughter. However, Merritt doesn’t mince words when it comes to confronting me about my affair with Eddie. Although I remain unperturbed, she brings up the subject again. We delve into my aspirations, but she expresses her understanding that I couldn’t help my actions. What she’s truly upset about is the affair, and she voices her disapproval. In response to my explanation that my emotional vulnerability led me to Eddie, she reacts angrily, slapping me across the face.

As a gamer putting aside my controller for a moment, I shared with Mom, Lois, the crushing truth about her affair, a revelation that left us both in tears. In time, I gathered all my courage and asked her to leave – a request she didn’t contest.

We’ve got one more episode tonight, followed by the Grotesquerie finale one week away — and apparently, we can expect yet more twists ahead. Tune in for episode 10 on FX on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 10:00 p.m. ET. The finale will stream the next day on Hulu.
