The Legend of Vox Machina cast addresses that shocking death in the latest episodes

As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the world of Dungeons & Dragons, I must say that the latest turn of events in The Legend of Vox Machina has left me both heartbroken and intrigued. The demise of Percy, our beloved steampunk gunslinger, is a blow that resonates deeply, not just because of his character within the game, but also due to the exceptional performance by Travis Willingham that brought him to life.

In episode seven of “The Legend of Vox Machina“, titled “Cloak and Dagger”, the character Percy, a gunslinger with a steampunk flair, encounters someone from his past – the cunning Anna Ripley. Following a gunfight, Percy extends mercy to her. Rather than accepting it, she retaliates by shooting him directly in the chest, resulting in his demise.

Vox Machina originates from a Dungeons & Dragons game played by Critical Role’s voice actor group, and just as in their campaign, Percy meets his end. But unlike the game where they manage to revive him at a temple, on the show, Percy’s demise is more permanent. This is because in D&D, it’s possible to bring characters back to life after death.

In the series, we managed to resurrect him swiftly, but Laura Bailey (Vex’ahlia), from Vox Machina, explained this to Polygon: “If someone is constantly revived after death, it can become routine and less impactful. To truly feel the sorrow, I believe it was necessary to prolong it.

Travis Willingham, the actor behind Grog’s barbarian character and also a writer for the show, concurred. As he expressed, “We aimed to make death carry significance.” He continued, “We wanted it to be impactful, as opposed to being insignificant if a character were to perish. This was an opportunity to reassess what truly matters in these characters’ lives and how vulnerable they can be, reminding us of the fleeting nature of things unless handled with care.

Will Percy be revived on The Legend of Vox Machina?

In three-episode batches, Amazon debuts Vox Machina, allowing viewers to catch up on two more episodes after the one where Percy met his end. Following this episode, we’ve witnessed the repercussions, notably for Vex’ahlia who had a romantic connection with Percy.

As a devoted fan, I find myself resonating deeply with Taliesin Jaffe, the talented actor portraying Percy, when he shared his thoughts about the current situation to Entertainment Weekly. It seems we’re all grappling with this unfamiliar reality, struggling to find the right words and actions. This moment of mortality has left us all mourning, yearning for unity that feels hard to achieve.

There’s widespread sorrow about this situation, both on-screen and off. However, will it endure? Will Percy return? As we mentioned earlier, he was resurrected in the original D&D campaign; however, whether he remains deceased within The Legend of Vox Machina is still uncertain.

According to Laura Bailey hinting that they aimed for the aftermath of Percy’s death to last longer, it seems possible he could return at some point. However, we’ll need to continue watching to confirm this; the remaining three episodes of Vox Machina season 3 will be released on Amazon next Thursday, October 24. As for now, it’s uncertain if there will be a fourth season, but Amazon is planning to develop another Dungeons & Dragons campaign from Critical Role into an animated series.
