Lennie James on why he loves Mr Loverman’s imperfect ending

As a gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and relationships, I can relate to the complexities of Barry’s journey in Mr Loverman. The finale was not a fairy tale ending, but it felt authentic, raw, and true to life – much like some of my own gaming experiences!

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for the finale of Mr. Loverman, even though it doesn’t offer a joyful conclusion for everyone involved. According to Lennie James himself, he adores it!

At the end of the eight-part drama, the central characters Barry (James) and Morris (Ariyon Bakare) declare their relationship publicly, but being openly gay brings about complexities. Barry is grappling with accepting his sexuality, and while some of his family members have been supportive, it has intensified conflicts with others.

In a special conversation with Digital Spy, James shared his thoughts on why he believed the ending was just right.

He expresses his satisfaction by saying, “I appreciate how it concludes.” If it had been a scenario where everyone is calm, content, and Carmel (Sharon D. Clarke), Hubert (Clint Dyer), Morris, and Barry were enjoying a Sunday meal together, he would have reacted negatively, as he put it, “I’d find an excuse to leave,” James elaborated, referring to Barry’s former wife and her new companion.

Essentially, Barry revealing his identity is just the start, not the conclusion, as he explained. They have a journey ahead to deal with this new development.

As a dedicated fan, it feels like engaging in relentless pursuit for something, finally achieving it, only to realize there’s yet another path ahead. And that, I believe, is the essence of our current ending.

The actor from Fear the Walking Dead also mentioned that Barry, Morris, and others were embarking on fresh starts.

James shared with Digital Spy, “The most satisfying conclusion resembles Carmel. I adore how Hubert and Carmel’s relationship is portrayed, not just as two individuals who find comfort in each other’s presence, but something more profound, a bond that suggests they will share their lives together.

“They’re at it and they’re at it full on,” he added. “It has awakened something in her.”

“In her later years, she seems to have discovered a newfound sexual awareness, which is truly delightful to observe too.

Mr Loverman, based on the novel by Bernardine Evaristo, is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
