Now, a brand new version is officially being made, and it’s scheduled to be released just in time to celebrate the 70th anniversary of these beloved animated characters.
According to the Wall Street Journal, a new Alvin and the Chipmunks movie is in the works! Big Shot Pictures has partnered with Bagdasarian Productions and now owns a quarter of the Chipmunks brand, planning to create fresh content. The first project will be a theatrical release slated for late 2028. Big Shot Pictures shared a first look at the new Alvin – sporting his signature red hoodie – on their Instagram account.
Alvin, Simon, and Theodore Will Be Reintroduced in 2028
Recent advancements in AI have led fans to wonder if a recently released preview image was created using the technology. Many people commented, questioning its authenticity and urging the creators not to rely on AI for the animation in the upcoming Alvin and the Chipmunks reboot. So far, there’s been no official confirmation that the image or the movie will involve AI.

Short-Form Content and New Music Will Also Be Released
Beyond the upcoming animated movie, there are plans for more content, including short videos for platforms like YouTube. This deal also allows for new music, potentially leading to new Alvin and the Chipmunks albums. While some fans have expressed concerns about AI, many are excited to see the popular group return. It remains to be seen how all of this new content will be received.
Ross Bagdasarian first introduced Alvin and the Chipmunks in 1958. They began as fake singers on popular novelty records, then starred in their own cartoons and animated movies. Their recent theatrical run started with the 2007 film Alvin and the Chipmunks, concluding with the 2015 sequel Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.
