Agatha All Along review, Episode 6: Billy Maximoff’s backstory and intentions are finally revealed!
As a seasoned fan of Marvel’s intricate storylines and enigmatic characters, I must say that Agatha All Along has truly captured my attention. The latest episode’s narrative twist left me utterly spellbound, much like Agatha herself when she casts her spells.
Incredible, incredible, incredible! That was one captivating episode with a stunning revelation and a rich backstory! After weeks of speculation throughout the airing of WandaVision, it’s fantastic to see some clarity being provided at last.
Let’s not forget that peculiar incident involving the Hex when Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) was deactivating Westview, correct? This week, we encounter a scene reminiscent of a crossover as we delve deeper into the story of Teen/William Kaplan/Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke).
The previous week’s episode concluded with the astonishing revelation that Teen is, in fact, Billy Maximoff – the Scarlet Witch’s son. As the episode drew to a close, he accepted and showcased his powers, making for an unforgettable scene. In the background, Billie Eilish’s “You Should See Me in a Crown” played, adding emotional depth as his true identity was unveiled. The series Agatha All Along continued to impress and exceed expectations.
Experiencing a significant turn of events, let’s shift gears to this week’s episode titled “Familiar By Thy Side”. Dive into our review and recap below, but beware, there are substantial spoilers ahead!
Who really is William Kaplan, and how did he become Billy Maximoff?
The opening scene of “Familiar By Thy Side” might initially surprise you: William Kaplan, adorned with a yarmulke, is seen celebrating his bar mitzvah. Rest assured, it will all become clear as the story unfolds.
At his bar mitzvah celebration, William stepped aside for a palm reading during the after-party, where he unexpectedly crossed paths with none other than Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone). As you watch, you might find yourself puzzled about how these events connect. But hang on, I’ll explain it all soon enough.
In the course of their palm reading session, Lilia informs William that his “lifeline on his hand splits into two.” While we understand the implications, William seems bewildered. As if in a hurry and with a sense of urgency, Lilia advises him to seize the present moments before she discreetly places a symbol on a wooden piece and slips it into the pocket of his coat, which was left behind in her tent. This same symbol later appears on his mouth whenever he attempts to disclose his true identity.
As Lilia leaves, she gives the coat to a woman who bears a strong resemblance to Agatha (Kathryn Hahn); however, it’s not certain if it’s her. Lilia is praying that the coat reaches William, as he might require anonymity in the future.
After a brief lull, the party quickly erupts with activity as it becomes clear that the anomaly at Westview is about to crumble. (Hey there, WandaVision!) William and his family hurriedly leave in a flurry, but unfortunately crash their car into a tree while we catch a casual radio broadcast of Wanda’s voice.
Although William’s parents managed to survive the accident, it was evident that he didn’t. In essence, he appeared to be deceased…but then he wasn’t.
As the hex contracted, we found ourselves back at the scene in “WandaVision” where Wanda watched Vision and her two sons vanish into nothingness as her illusion of them faded away. This pivotal moment occurred simultaneously with the demise of William Kaplan; at that instant, Billy Maximoff’s spirit entered William’s body, discovering a new home.
In a surprising turn of events, Billy Maximoff, now referred to as William, opens his eyes to discover unfamiliar faces claiming to be his parents. Strangely, he can’t recall William’s past experiences, nor does he remember his existence within the Hex.
Curiouser and curiouser…
Three years later…
Following a challenging homecoming and the startling discovery of his mind-reading ability, Billy is compelled to assume the identity of William Kaplan, whether he prefers it or not. Over the course of three years, we observe Billy growing closer to a prospective partner, Eddie (Miles Gutierrez-Riley).
Indeed, Billy possesses the ability to decipher every thought his partner, Eddie, harbors. Fortunately for Billy, one of those thoughts is Eddie preparing to express “I love you.” It’s a touching moment, but even so, Billy feels a pang of doubt as he is aware that he carries a substantial amount of baggage. In an effort to be transparent, Billy shares with Eddie the events of three years ago, and even leads him up to his room to demonstrate the evidence he has amassed to help clarify the memories he can no longer recall.
I stumbled upon a mysterious online gamer, known as @bohnerific69, whom I’m eager to gather more insights from. My buddy Eddie and I arranged to meet this enigmatic figure in a secluded parking garage. As expected, he arrived wearing a trench coat, trying to exude an air of secrecy and suspicion.
Who’s this unknown character? None other than Ralph Bohner (played by Evan Peters)! I guess the username tipped you off, right? If your memory needs a jog, let me remind you that he was Wanda’s fictitious brother, Pietro, during her Hex period. Although he was Wanda’s “brother” back then, he doesn’t seem too pleased to hear his name spoken by Billy now.
Instead of focusing on Agatha, what captivates us more are Ralph’s thoughts. Despite Ralph’s reluctance to discuss Agatha, Billy persists and inquires about her. Ralph then reveals the terrible actions Agatha inflicted upon him within the Hex, such as how she mistreated Wanda’s children, Billy and Tommy. Boom, boom, boom, we seem to be getting closer to the truth!
As for what transpired concerning Wanda, Vision, and their children, I’ve got some news to share – unfortunate, I’m afraid. Wanda passed away, Vision was taken apart for his components, and the kids… well, they seem to have vanished without a trace. And let me tell you something else: Agatha continues to reside within Westview.
Indeed, at this juncture, Billy is oblivious to and doesn’t fully comprehend the extremes Agatha might take when acting maliciously. Yet, surprisingly, this fact doesn’t deter him from pursuing her encounters nonetheless.
Billy Maximoff meets Agatha Harkness
Following his encounter with Ralph, Billy immerses himself in exploring Wanda and her kin, the Maximoffs, eagerly seeking out any information available. Incidentally, he does this while enjoying Lorna Wu’s “Ballad of the Witches Road,” considering it appropriate music for such an inquiry.
He’s able to find a picture of Agatha through Google as is reminded that she still lives in Westview. Side note: He gets a text from Eddie with a black heart; is this the umpteenth reference to black heart? Mephisto, where are you?
In a swift turn of events, Billy finds himself uncovering something lost and recalls that Tommy Maximoff is the one who has vanished. It clicks! Ah-ha! All along, he had been searching for his brother; whether Tommy is still alive or not depends on where his soul ended up upon the Hex’s fall.
In order for Billy to learn whatever he needs, he understands that casting a release spell on Agatha is necessary, and this can only be done with one of her belongings. Thus, the plan to infiltrate Agatha’s home, codenamed Operation Break-In, is initiated. This brings us back to the beginning of the series when Agatha first detects an intruder in her house – someone we now recognize as Billy.
Following a pursuit and dash, Agatha returns Billy to her residence, whereupon he discloses his intention of freeing her from an enchantment. At this juncture, Agatha, as we recognize her, remains under the influence of a spell, persistently convinced that she is a detective.
Ending of Agatha All Along Season 1, Episode 6 explained
Moving forward to the current time, having delved into Billy’s story, we find Agatha emerging from the mud, a state in which Billy had left her at the conclusion of the previous episode.
Indeed, it seems Billy is curious about when Agatha discovered his true identity. Apparently, there’s a distinctive trait between him and his mother, but Agatha hadn’t figured it out until Billy unleashed such a powerful magic display just last week.
Billy believes he can proceed along the Witches’ Path without Agatha, and when he discovers he can no longer employ his magical abilities, she lets out her signature chuckle from Agatha. She then queries what exactly he seeks from the Witches’ Path, hinting that even his own mother considered Westview more valuable than him. Moreover, she suggests that he didn’t act wrongly by usurping William’s body, as sometimes one must do what they must to endure. Indeed, Agatha Harkness offers insightful advice, doesn’t she?
It dawns on Agatha that Billy is looking for “Toby” as she says; he corrects her and says, “Tommy.” He feels that his brother is out there somewhere, in some form. What form exactly? We’re all eager to know!
Have they survived their journey along the Witches’ Path and moved on to the next test without encountering any other witches? Are they still among the living? Could it be that we’re gradually losing the witches, one after another?
It’s clear that Billy does not trust Agatha, he says as much, but he wants to find his brother, and he wants to be reunited with possibly the only family he has left. (Isn’t Vision getting a Disney+ show, though?) It’ll be intriguing to see where this journey takes Agatha and Billy next, with all the revelations out there now, it is only the Witches’ Road that lies ahead. And maybe, just maybe, a Scarlet Witch cameo? We can keep hoping, can’t we?
