Anna Kendrick “shocked” herself fighting for Woman of the Hour’s bold opening
As a fan who has followed Anna Kendrick‘s career since her days at Belle Vergere High School, I must say that her directorial debut with “Woman of the Hour” is nothing short of remarkable. This thriller, based on the bizarre and chilling true story of Cheryl Bradshaw and Rodney Alcala, showcases Kendrick’s knack for taking risks and her unwavering commitment to telling compelling stories.
Anna Kendrick dared greatly in her first directorial venture, the Netflix film titled “Woman of the Hour“, as she opted for a fearless and unreserved style of direction.
The excellent thriller is based on the stranger-than-fiction story of aspiring actor Cheryl Bradshaw who, in 1978, ended up matching with serial killer Rodney Alcala when she appeared on The Dating Game.
As a gaming enthusiast diving into “Woman of the Hour,” I’d say it’s a creative retelling of the extraordinary incidents unfolding on the show, but with a keen focus on the real-life victims that The Alcala character took from us – the women he brutally murdered. It steers clear of sensationalism, opting instead for a raw and honest portrayal of those tragic events.
Initially, the film begins with an unsettling scene depicting one of Alcala’s murders. This striking start was a point of contention during production, but director Kendrick successfully defended its inclusion.
She candidly admitted her surprise at her own determination. Essentially, she had conveyed something like, “If it truly matters to you all that the film launches in a nightclub and carries a specific vibe, that’s understandable, but I’m unsure about how to create that particular movie,” she shared with Digital Spy.
I found myself remarking, ‘I can hardly believe I’m uttering these words. This is my debut as a director and I’m showing some nerve.’ A small voice inside me questioned, ‘What makes me think I have the right to say this?’ However, I must admit that I am quite fond of the opening scene.
When you truly struggle for something, achieving success brings a profound sense of joy that remains vivid in your memory and can even take on legendary proportions.
Memories of instances where I stood up for something, but turned out to be mistaken, tend to become less clear. In fact, it’s challenging for me to recall whether such events actually took place at all.
The strategy seemed to have been successful for Kendrick, as Woman of the Hour – a project she not only starred in but also executive produced – received a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes after its debut during the previous year’s world premiere.
As I eagerly await the Netflix premiere of this thrilling masterpiece later this week, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation knowing it currently boasts a staggering 91% rating – just shy of my personal best for the esteemed Kendrick.
Woman of the Hour is released on Netflix on October 18.
