From season 3 episode 4 recap: Boyd is forced to make a horrific decision

As a longtime fan of this gripping series, I must say that episode 4 of From has left me utterly spellbound! The writers have a knack for keeping us on our toes with unexpected twists and turns, and this episode was no exception.

It didn’t take long for Tabitha’s initial foray into reality, did it? The climax of season 3, episode 3 in From, was quite a surprise to both viewers and characters as we find out that Tabitha and Henry are en route in an ambulance, about to be caught up in the chaos of Fromville. However, let’s not jump ahead too quickly. This series is known for throwing unexpected twists, so who knows what’s coming next?

In the fourth installment, aptly named “There and Back Again,” we find ourselves resuming with Tabitha’s spine-tingling disclosure that they’ve found themselves back at their original location. Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the ambulance crew are unaware of the situation they are about to encounter, and Tabitha can’t explain it without sounding irrational. She attempts to persuade them to continue on the road and proceed into town where assistance can be found. The night is rapidly growing dark, a sign we all recognize…

In town once more, the annoying ring of the phone echoes again, this time it’s “Thomas” reaching out to Ethan. He delivers grim news about Ethan’s mom, stating she’s on an ambulance and is soon going to require his assistance. Upon hearing his son’s call, Jim swiftly disconnects the whole device. This might well be one of the wisest actions he’s taken in a while.

In another part of their shared space, Victor seeks Sarah’s help. To be honest, I find it heartwarming how From brings them closer. Victor invites Sarah to venture with him into the basement to construct a cozy fort made from blankets. It is within this fort that he opens up about his past in town, recounting the day his mother instructed him to hide in the cellar overnight. Despite his sister not being told the same, Victor obeyed and spent the night underground. Upon emerging the next morning, he was greeted by a gruesome sight – bodies everywhere. Remarkably, Victor claims that was when he first encountered the Boy in White, who would later become his sole companion.

After that, Victor collected all his valuable possessions and placed them in an aging suitcase. Now he’s all set to open it and check if it could jog his memory. The question is, what made him choose Sarah? “Because if I have to recall some frightening incidents, you’re the most terrifying person around, so you won’t get scared.” These two share quite a few amusing interactions.

Previously, Boyd had become resolute about a fresh strategy to seize one of the monsters. Unexpectedly, Randall opted to remain on the bus with Boyd rather than heading to the sheriff’s station. Randall spoke words that sent a shiver down everyone’s spine. His past experiences with Julie and Marielle had left him severely troubled. He no longer viewed death in this town as the most terrible fate, instead yearning for an escape. The opportunity to do so, whenever it presented itself, he was ready to seize. The writers subtly hinted at some ominous events to come with this dialogue.

Chaos erupts once the ambulance enters town’s boundary. As anticipated, the paramedics and officer disregard Tabitha’s alerts. The officer even restrains Tabitha within the emergency vehicle by handcuffing her. Upon leaving the vehicle, the two men try to assist a woman on the road, only to be brutally attacked immediately. Since guns are useless against these creatures, the officer is equally powerless but manages to flee to Colony House…where one of her shots unfortunately strikes Nicky (Tamara Fifield), one of the newcomers in season 3.

When Ethan spots the ambulance, he understands that his mother must be inside. Jim, Boyd, and Randall hurry out to rescue her, but the handcuffs create a snag. Randall goes back to the bus to fetch a toolkit, which he gives to Boyd at the crucial moment as monsters close in. Their plan is to get the ambulance started and drive everyone to Colony House. However, things never go as planned. The key for the ambulance eludes Boyd until a monster voluntarily gives it to him. But this kindness comes with a price – they demand Randall in return. “You can’t save them all.” Damn it. Faced with this dilemma, Boyd is compelled to leave Randall behind to his destiny and focus on saving the other passengers instead.

Strange occurrences are happening at Colony House as well. Tillie becomes uneasy, worrying something ominous might befall Fatima, perhaps the bird was a harbinger. Another resident suggests that Tillie’s tarot card readings in such a location could lead to trouble. That makes sense. Later, Elgin spots another eerie spirit. She seeks his assistance.

Boyd tells Donna about his encounter with Randall, but their conversation is cut short when Nicky suffers a seizure. Unfortunately, despite Marielle’s attempts to save him, Nicky dies from his gunshot wound and internal bleeding. This news overwhelms Boyd, causing him to confront the officer for indiscriminate shooting. Donna tries to console him, but instead she breaks down in tears. The situation is becoming unbearable.

In the heart of the city, Julie confesses to Ethan that she has never felt as fearful as she did during a time when she claims to have been asleep. Despite being unsure about what she witnessed, it’s evident that the event was absolutely terrifying for her. It seems quite apparent that both Julie and Randall are deeply affected by their ordeal. I can’t help but ponder if Marielle has also experienced a similar trauma.

In the heart of the forest, Jade, Kenny, and Kristi share some moments, strengthening their bond while they pass the night in a log cabin. Jade opens up to them about the strange visions he’s been experiencing, then hands them Tian-Chen’s journal from his storage, the one Jade has been using in an attempt to understand the mysteries surrounding this town.

The blanket fort thing with Sarah and Victor doesn’t go well. Once Victor realizes something is missing from someone named “Christopher” he knew, he freaks out and wrecks the whole thing. Sarah works to calm him down, and Victor recalls that creepy ventriloquist dummy we’ve seen before. The dummy was Jasper and Christopher used it to make everyone laugh. Then he started seeing that symbol and became aggressive, isolated, and erratic. Victor once saw Christopher having a full conversation with Jasper and now seems to believe that Jasper the dummy can tell them what really happened.

This episode concludes with a few more unsettling twists. Fatima remains with Nicky’s corpse to begin consuming it, which is quite a leap from spoiled crops. Meanwhile, Boyd and Donna celebrate “better days,” but an ambulance suddenly starts flashing lights. The monsters have left Randall in a severely injured and bloody state on the ambulance hood. Remarkably, he’s still alive.
