Starz sadly cancels The Serpent Queen, but it may not be a complete goodbye yet

As a seasoned gamer of historical dramas, I must say that the cancellation of “The Serpent Queen” has left me with a sense of melancholy and disbelief. I’ve been following this captivating series since its inception, and it’s always a bitter pill to swallow when a show you love comes to an unexpected end.

As a devoted fan of “The Serpent Queen,” I regretfully have some disheartening news to share with you all. Sadly, the series, led by Samantha Morton, has been officially scrapped by Starz, according to Deadline. This announcement comes around about a month and a half since the second season concluded. It’s truly unfortunate because I firmly believe that this show is exceptional, and a third season would have only added to its greatness.

Based on how the second season concluded, it left me feeling somewhat contentedly puzzled as a spectator. The last episode depicted the infamous St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, which was as gruesome as always, with Catherine de’ Medici wielding immense power and the Valois family maintaining their position. However, there are still some unresolved plot points, and it’s intriguing to think about the directions the series could have taken if a third season had been planned.

The Guise brothers are locked up, but the Bourbon bros have miraculously survived the slaughtering that took place. There’s also the fact that King Charles is sick and is likely to die soon, and Anjou had that sinister smile at the end. And now he’s working with his mom instead of not listening to her. There’s also the fact that Rahema is pregnant by Alessandro, but Catherine killed her brother for betraying her.

I wish there had been an additional season of “The Serpent Queen” to conclude the story, but regrettably, this isn’t always possible. Deadline reports that despite the show receiving good ratings, the two-year interval between seasons 1 and 2 resulted in lower viewership numbers. This is undoubtedly a significant aspect networks take into account when deciding whether a series should continue or not.

Despite my expectations, Starz’s decision to cancel “The Serpent Queen” comes as somewhat of a surprise given its reputation for historical dramas. After all, the network has a long history of producing these types of shows and appears to have a fondness for them. However, it seems that this marks the end of the Valois family’s story for now. Yet, even though “The Serpent Queen” may be leaving our screens, there is still a chance that we might not say goodbye to its universe entirely.

The Serpent Queen spin-off with Elizabeth I is in the works

As a dedicated admirer, I must say that in the second season of “The Serpent Queen,” the character of Elizabeth I, the Queen of England, made her grand entrance. And who played this captivating portrayal but none other than Minnie Driver! It appears that Starz was equally smitten by Driver’s interpretation of the historical icon, as news has it that a spin-off titled “The Virgin Queen” is now under development, featuring Elizabeth I herself. This exciting update comes courtesy of Deadline.

According to recent reports, the original series creator Justin Haythe and executive producer Erwin Stoff are preparing to develop a spin-off series. As of now, no cast members have been officially confirmed, but it is anticipated that Driver will return to her role. Frankly, it seems odd to me that they’d be working on this sequel series without Driver being involved.

For some people who didn’t watch The Serpent Queen, it may not matter that Leslie Driver isn’t returning for another season. However, for those of us who did watch, it feels odd to imagine the show without her back in her role. Given how entertaining she was in the brief time we saw her during the second season, I’d be thrilled if she returned! What are your thoughts on the cancellation and potential spin-off news?

Both seasons of The Serpent Queen are streaming on Starz.
