Sony’s Wearable AC Just Got Colder: Meet the Reon Pocket Pro Plus

Summary

  • Performance boost of 20 percent over previous iterations, dropping body temperatures an additional two degrees Celsius
  • Adjustable exhaust vent designed to push warm air away from the user, clearing high-collared shirts with ease
  • Bundled Reon Pocket Tag 2 sensor feeds real-time ambient climate data to a smartphone companion app for automatic adjustments

Summer commutes can be really uncomfortable, but Sony has a new device designed to keep you cool before you even start to sweat. The Sony Reon Pocket Pro Plus is a wearable air conditioner that rests against the back of your neck and directly cools your skin. Now available in Europe and the UK, this upgraded device is a step forward in wearable technology. It was designed by a former Sony camera engineer and offers 20% better cooling than the previous model, dropping the temperature on your skin by an extra two degrees Celsius.

Previous versions struggled to stay in place while you were moving, so this updated design features a new neckband with flexible arms. This improved structure is 40% more stable, firmly holding the cooling plates against your back even when you’re walking quickly or running for the train. To prevent heat buildup, a vent now extends and angles outward to effectively release hot air, even with high-collared shirts. The device also comes in a Light Grey color that blends well with lighter summer clothing.

This personal cooling device runs on a battery that lasts up to ten hours at its highest setting – the same as the previous model, even with its improved performance. Each package includes the new Reon Pocket Tag 2, a small sensor that clips to your belt or bag. Unlike earlier versions, this sensor measures both your body temperature and the temperature and humidity around you. It connects directly to the device and a smartphone app, allowing it to adjust the cooling automatically as you move between hot and cold environments, like stepping from a sunny street into an air-conditioned building.

The personal cooling device has become increasingly popular in Europe, now available in countries like Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Switzerland. However, it’s still not available worldwide. Sony hasn’t announced plans to release it in the United States, leaving fans in North America waiting. PCMag suggests it could cost around $270 if it does come to the US. For now, the Sony Reon Pocket Pro Plus remains a unique, and perhaps slightly unsettling, solution for staying cool during hot weather.
