Star Wars: A New Legacy celebrates a decade of comic storytelling

As a die-hard Star Wars fan who’s been following the Marvel comics since the ’70s, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming one-shot issue, Star Wars: A New Legacy! Ten years of incredible storytelling culminating into this epic celebration of our beloved characters and creators is nothing short of a dream come true.

In honor of ten years of storytelling in the Star Wars universe, Marvel is releasing a special issue titled “Star Wars: A New Legacy” on January 29, 2025.

For decades, many people have been captivated by Marvel Comics stories that date back to the 1970s, when they were adapted into movies. These tales revolve around characters like hoojibs, Crimson Jack, and the ongoing escapades of the Star Warriors. On January 14, 2015, the publisher launched Star Wars (2015) #1, starting a new chapter of adventures for younger audiences, with Jason Aaron penning the script and John Cassaday providing striking cover art. The story began with an introduction that hinted at thrilling events as “the Rebels aim to seize the initiative by launching a bold attack across vast areas of space.

The Legacy

In January, a special comic titled “Star Wars: A New Legacy” will be published to mark ten years since the launch of these new series. As announced by Marvel Comics, this one-shot comic will showcase fresh tales penned by some of the most significant Star Wars comic writers from the past decade, such as Charles Soule, Jason Aaron, and Kieron Gillen. Editor Mark Paniccia describes it as an outstanding collection featuring “some of the most influential Star Wars comic authors in recent years, along with stunning artwork.

This matter is expected to shine a light on numerous characters created by Marvel, featuring both long-standing and fresh fans with an exciting blast-off experience!

The stories

Three narratives are set to feature in the upcoming comic issue. Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas will introduce Doctor Aphra and Sana Starros on Alderaan, where they plan a heist coinciding with an event celebrating the Emperor, orchestrated by Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin. The unexpected entrance of a Sith artifact could ruin the festivities for all! Marvel hints at this. Unbeknownst to everyone, Valance the Hunter might gatecrash the party as well!

Reuniting Task Force 99, also known as Scar Squadron, Jason Aaron and Leonard Kirk carry on with the narrative about this exceptional team of stormtroopers who reported directly to Darth Vader. They were some of the most formidable adversaries that Luke, Leia, and the Rebellion had encountered.

In the end, Kieron Gillen reintroduces beloved character Doctor Aphra, who has also gained significant popularity. This character, alongside the complex figure of Darth Vader, is part of a narrative that unfolds during [Gillen’s] successful tenure on DARTH VADER (2015). Also included in this tale are Doctor Aphra’s former associates: 0-0-0, BT-1, and Krrsantan.

Although we’ve got a bit of time left before the arrival of the one-time event, “Star Wars: A New Legacy,” there are numerous exciting weekly installments to anticipate in Star Wars Comics until then. Mark your calendars as it hits comic book stores on January 29, 2025.
